Are Antifreeze Fumes Harmful?

Antifreeze fumes can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. However, antifreeze shouldn’t be systematically toxic unless physically consumed. Antifreeze can also cause mild skin irritation, though the fumes are far more harmful.

Effects of Inhaling Antifreeze Fumes

Harmful antifreeze fumes are released from the ethylene glycol chemical, which reacts with oxidants and acids. As ethylene glycol vapours are heavier than air, they can collect in poorly ventilated areas, often below ground level.

If inhaled excessively, ethylene glycol increases risk of breathing difficulties, heart problems, kidney failure and brain damage. Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are more susceptible to the effects of inhaling antifreeze fumes.

Material Safety Data sheets show that frequent inhalation of antifreeze fumes can damage the central nervous system. They can even induce coma if the fumes are inhaled in mist form.

If an individual has inhaled antifreeze fumes, move them into an environment with fresh air and administer artificial respiration. You may need to seek emergency medical attention too.

How to Store and Dispose of Antifreeze

To avoid inhaling antifreeze fumes, store antifreeze in its original container. Alternatively, use a clearly marked container that identifies the contents as a chemical. Keep antifreeze away from children and pets — it can kill if consumed.

Antifreeze should never be disposed of in sewers or waterways. Take your unwanted antifreeze to a local recycling centre or service station instead.

It’s important to handle antifreeze safely when self-servicing your car. Follow these steps to safely top up your antifreeze.
