As the newest headlight bulbs on the market, many new vehicles are manufactured with LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs. And many drivers are upgrading their halogen and xenon HID bulbs in favour of new super-bright LEDs too.

These are the three main benefits that make LEDs worth the upgrade.

3 Reasons to Upgrade to LED Bulbs

1. Energy Efficiency: LEDs are the most efficient bulbs for converting electricity into a lighting output. They can achieve an incredibly bright light while using much less energy than halogen or xenon HID bulbs, which is great for the environment as well as extending the lifetime of your battery.

In fact, LED bulbs use 40% less energy than xenon HID bulbs and over 60% less energy than halogen bulbs. It’s for this reason that LEDs can also reduce your car tax.

2. Lifetime: LEDs have the longest lifetime out of all the car bulbs on the market. They can last for 11,000–20,000 miles and beyond, meaning that they may well last for the entire duration of the time you own your vehicle.

Performance: Compared to other lighting technologies, LED bulbs offer the most control over the direction of light beams. This allows drivers to avoid projecting light at steep angles, meaning that other drivers won’t be dazzled.

Keeping LED Bulbs Cools

Though LED bulbs produce less heat than halogen bulbs and xenon HID bulbs, they are more vulnerable to heat. To control this, LEDs are designed with mini fans and heat sinks.

However, some unreliable manufacturers have been known to produce low-quality LED bulbs without these features and sell them at lower prices. These bulbs cannot achieve effective heat dissipation and tend to fail due to overheating. Ensure you only buy your bulbs from a reliable supplier who only stocks car bulbs from trusted manufacturers. Read our blog post on finding the car bulbs that you need here.

Replacing Your Bulbs With LEDs

If you want to upgrade your headlights to LEDs with minimal modification to your housing and circuits, your best option may be to buy a retrofit kit. These include a ballast that controls the electric power to the bulb and a cooling system with a fan and a heat sink.
