Sales of electric cars have grown steadily over the last few years. 2014 saw the sale of 500 electric cars, and sales reached 4,500 per month in 2018. But how long will it be until electric vehicles replace petrol and diesel vehicles altogether?

As we continue to tackle CO2 emissions, switching to electric vehicles is one of the most powerful steps that we can take. The average passenger vehicle emits approximately 4.6 tonnes of CO2every year.

In fact, diesel vehicles emit a whole 50% more greenhouse gases than electric vehicles.

As a result of their green benefits, electric vehicles will likely become one of the main modes of transport by 2040.

How Do Electric Cars Work?

Electric motors use stacks of lithium-ion batteries to generate power. Battery stacks are heavy, which is why most electric vehicles weigh more than conventional vehicles. Historically, electric vehicles used lead-acid variety, but lithium-ion batteries store far more energy.

The battery is usually positioned low down in the vehicle — sometimes running along the floor — to keep the car’s centre of gravity low. This helps the car to stay planted when driving around corners.

Electric cars need to be charged, either from a standard domestic socket, wall-mounted charger or service station charger. This will change though. In the future, we will be able to charge electric vehicles by driving into designated spaces for inductive (wireless) charging.

The Future of the Electric Car

Experts predict that the cost of electric vehicles will continue to fall over the next few years in line with the drop in lithium-ion battery prices as the government encourages the shift to electric vehicles.
