Understanding the anatomy of your vehicle is important when you want to self-service your car parts — and even replace them.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how to locate your glow plugs and get started on the task of replacing them.

Where to Locate Your Glow Plugs

Diesel engines may have as many as ten glow plugs, one located in each cylinder. The glow plugs are directly connected to the engine control unit, which uses a microprocessor to analyse engine input. This determines when to turn the current for the glow plugs on and off, as well as the amount of current required to heat the glow plugs. This depends on the engine’s starting temperature.

Once the glow plug module has determined the timing and electric current that the glow plugs require, current flows to each glow plug’s heating unit, which emits a visible glow. Intake air is compressed, and the glow plugs receive fuel from the fuel injectors. This fuel mixes with the compressed air and evaporates to initiate combustion.

Buying Glow Plugs

Glow plug location varies from vehicle to vehicle, and some require considerably more digging to access than others. Check your vehicle handbook for instructions that are specific to your make and model. The glow plugs may be protected by plastic housing that you will have to remove. If you’ll be changing your glow plugs, remember to disconnect the black negative cable to ensure safety.

Once you’ve managed to locate your glow plugs, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got the right replacements so that you can change your plugs and keep your vehicle in good running order.
