In Slack, a messaging app, collaboration happens inside channels. It can be around a particular topic or team-centric, i.e., #daily-meetings. You can always use a channel browser to join a Slack channel you might need.

There are the following types of Slack channels to join:

  • public channel — open to any Slack user within an organization;
  • private channel — only invited folks can have access there;
  • shared channel — a channel type to communicate with external organizations via Slack Connect;
  • general channel — every new member gets invited there;

To join a Slack channel, click Channels on the left and choose to Browse or search channels.

1. Click the channel you’d like to join, and choose the Join Channel or See More Details option.

2. See More Details contains a list of channel members and the purpose of a channel.

3. Click Join Channel or just press Enter to join this channel.

You can be a member of multiple channels in your Slack team. All the channels you’re a member of will appear on the left in your Slack window.

As a new message or question appears in a channel, you will see its name turning bold. And if you’re mentioned in a channel, there will be a notification with the number.

Every person in a Slack Workspace can create a new channel by defining a channel name and inviting users to start a conversation there.

Moreover, you can invite an external guest if you’re on a paid plan and your slack administrator didn’t switch this feature off.

Disclaimer: to use Slack, you must create a Slack account using your work email address and install a Slack App or use it via a browser.
