‘Flo’ The Smart Floor
Hey flo How-du-ino❓
‘Make your own future stories’ they said and there is what it started . I made stories using ridiculously impossible to do technology . ‘Was it even possible?’ i thought . 😮
‘But But who am i to decide what is possible ?’ (second thought)
Because WHAT WAS ONCE just a figment of the imagination of some our most famous science fiction writers, artificial intelligence (AI) is taking root in our everyday lives. We already have machine-learning algorithms that enable them to react and respond in real time. There will be growing pains as AI technology evolves, but the positive effect it will have on society in terms of efficiency is immeasurable. 👏
I combined my weirdly beautiful futuristic stories that talked about levitating chairs , smart ; spoons , clocks , vegetation and smartfloor all into one story . You can read the story below 😉
Story
— ‘Aria sat on her favourite levitating cushioned chair .She wanted to enjoy her cup of coffee tonight .She put in the spoon inside to check for the perfect amount of sugar in the coffee and to make sure that the temperature of the coffee was right .The spoon displayed the perfect temperature and sugar , the way she liked it except that it also showed that the coffee was little bitter than the usual .She scribbled something on her digital notepad with the inkiness pen and records were sent to her computer kept in her master bedroom.
She felt pretty dizzy and sleepy and the color lens she wore turned orange .Orange displayed the abnormality in visions .
As she started to walk towards her bed for a small nap ,on her way she collapsed to the ground quietly with a loud thud .The floor recognised that it was a body collapse and turned the area of impact into blue ,but when she didn’t get up for two minutes straight the floor turned red and sent a signal to the hospital and family members nearby .The augmented/ hologram greenery in her room sensed no motion for a while and thus disappeared making her room look really empty.She liked minimalism we guessed.
As the ambulance and police arrived to check on her , she was already dead.The smart hanging clock on the wall was then investigated.It provided all the statistics of her mood , actions , sounds and behaviour right before her death . The investigators now would soon figure out the cause of her death …….
My colleagues and course guides wanted me to play around the idea of smart floors.So did I …..
‘Smart floors it is’ i thought
Imagine your floor guides you through your house or speaks to you . Helps you to make decisions .Plays with you or understands exactly what you want .Tracks the number of steps you take in the house ? Artificially intelligent floor 😮
When i thought of smart floors , i initially began with the idea on how my floor can act as security . To protect , to avoid threat .
Come ill take you through my stories within the stories……
For starters I programmed my Arduino x-x
To switch on lights , beep alarms and send a message on phone that some strange person has entered the house using a bluetooth /wireless module but on a press of a switch……
Later i did the same thing but added sensors and alarms this time . Not to forget , it sent message on my phone … ‘someone has entered your house’
off topic > Chase effect learnt ! yay !!!!! 👏
Next I ideated around the idea on how i could shift two modes of the floor with help of on/off digital switch on my android device .I coded Dance mode on type command of letter‘D’ and baby mode on letter ‘B’
Dance Mode 💃: The floor plays music on touch of every step step that you take .Dance and create music ;)
Baby Mode 👶 : Ah you don’t want your baby to exit the room and wander elsewhere ? Not to worry , this floor will track your baby exit….

More ideas that i started to think of for the floor :
Water spill cautioning smart floor? Texture/design and colour changing floor ? Temperature maintaining floor ? ‘Safe locking some area’ smart floor?
BUT BUT BUT……
This is not what we were supposed to do .I started trying to solve problems . I tried to combine futuristic interactions with problem solving .While it was more about future interactions and learning and something simpleand intelligent.Direction change required
So now things to keep in mind……
- Think simple
- Involve AI
- Material ? Trust ?
- How will i make this ‘platform’ floor stereotype into something more interactive????
NEW INTERACTION STORY WITH THE FLOOR
sO a girl walks in hops and dances on the floor named ‘ flo’ . Flo is a smart AI floor that builds music according to her every step that she takes .She tells flo to be quite .Flo stops the music.She looks at a photo of her husband whom she divorced . She knocks at flo and asks “ Flo does my husband miss me ?” Flo shows green light ‘yes’. “Flo should i get back with him” Flo says no with red light . “Flo i love you”.Flo vibrates to show love and empathy . ‘Hits flo palyfully’ Flo scatters playfully and gathers itself back .

- Could Flo be totally AI?
- Will Flo recognise who i am ?
- How could social interactions between multiple people be handled by the floor?
- Could it encourage group activity ?
- Do i need to talk to it ? Can it respond to or understand my movements alone ?

So obviously now my Smartfloor wouldn't just be talking to me , cause isn't it too mainstream guys ?Anything could talk to me right? Whats about the floor particularly? Id rather shift my idea now ! Buckle up girl !
