I have been working in the field of education for almost a decade. My teaching experience showed me that if we do not find the most efficient way to teach mathematics to our students, we cannot be good educators no matter how hard we try.

What I learned from my students is that they love playing games. A good math game can make the kids learn in a more fun and interactive way. Since then, I have been trying to find some cool math games that I can use in my classroom.

I have curated some of my favorite math games for you. If you are a math teacher or homeschooling family, you should get these games with so many learning opportunities built in the play.

Prime Climb

Learn more about Prime Climb

I purchased Prime Climb last year for my Algebra class and, I must say, it has exceeded my highest expectations. It pushes students to think practically while at the same time having fun. Not only that, but the colors and also the design are very nice indeed.

The premise of the game is that there are numbers from 0 to 101 organized on a spiral. To win the game, you must get your pawn to the number 101. To move, you must first roll your dice on your turn and then perform mathematical operations with the numbers you get. While the game rules might be too complicated for middle schoolers to understand, you can make your own set of rules to simplify the game as you like.

As an example, elementary and middle school students may only do addition and subtraction operations while playing. Later on, when you add multiplication to the mix, you will see that the game gets a lot more fun and challenging. Another reality, however, is that students must practice all four operations regularly to keep themselves sharp.

To win the game, however, skill and strategy aren’t the only things necessary. It would also help if you had the luck factor on your side as well.

In summary, this game is an excellent investment for the future of your children. The makers of Prime Climb have a lovely website that you can visit to see all of the game’s details.

Proof

Learn more about Proof

Proof is a game that enhances the four operations of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) of children. After regularly playing this game, we can surmise that many children will have the ability to do the four operations in their minds. Teachers can even use this game as a group activity for their students in the classroom. While it may seem that this game is for elementary children, it can be designed for any age group, albeit the individuals that are better at the four operations may have to show some tolerance towards the less knowledgeable in that category.

We can say that the most significant advantage of this game is that it poses a brilliant route for increasing critical thinking ability. After a few hands, all the players get a feel for the game’s strategies, making it a much more competitive environment for all parties. Later, the player that has the best imagination and the fastest thinking skills wins.

Another aspect of this game that separates it from the rest is that any equation you perform inherently affects the other players and causes them to have to think on their feet and react swiftly and differently. That means that players have to perform direct competitive math to come out as the victors.

Proof is the best bang for the buck. Since children can play at different levels and difficulties, they do not get bored very quickly. In summary, for a parent starting homeschooling or a math teacher who is tired of their students being bored in class, this game is a must buy. Lastly, if I were a recruiter for a business, I would definitely play this game with the recruits.

Tiny Polka Dot

Learn more about Tiny Polka Dot

Tiny Polka Dot is a game that has is designed with unique colors and cards to captivate children’s attention and to help them learn numbers. Many different ways to play this game exist, and the creators have provided some on their website. The only negative thing about this game is the thickness of the cards; instead, how thin they are. Due to this setback, cards are easily bent and can become very worn out very quickly.

We bought this game through a recommendation for our little daughter to teach her about numbers and how to put them in order correctly. After a short time, my daughter swiftly and accurately identified the number four when shown the card for it. That is because she saw two dots by two dots. This form of teaching children about numbers is very creative and helps them understand and place the numbers in their minds properly.

What makes the game playable for a long time is the many variations that exist within it. For example, in the beginning, you can start with numbers 0 to 3. Later, you can raise the bar higher by using numbers 0 to 10 as well. Two children can even make their own game when they work together.

This game is ideal if you want children to take a step towards mathematical thinking. It is even educational when cleaning up the game, as putting the numbers in a particular order is another lesson in and of itself.

MOBI Fast Fun Numerical Tile Game

MOBI is a lovely game by design. While it isn’t instrumental in introducing children to an understanding of numbers, it is a constructive activity to aid those who struggle with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It can also be thought that introducing them to an understanding of equality is a step towards mathematical thinking.

Children love to play MOBI with each other. That is why this game is an incredible tool for children to learn or master the four operations at an entry-level. However, the problem with the game is that you cannot use large numbers to play it. You have to use smaller numbers to play it properly.

Kitki Three Sticks

Three Sticks is an interesting geometric game. It is a unique game for understanding how angles and polygons work. It has a lot of potentials because it is utterly fun, challenging, and of course, educational. More importantly, after a while, it also teachers strategy.

The rules might be tough to understand for you initially and takes a bit of time to learn and the gameplay. In summary, Kitki Three Sticks game has exceeded my expectations.

Osmo Genius Kit

Get Osmo Genius Creative Kit on Amazon.

In my opinion, Osmo is, among all of the tools and games made to help children learn and love mathematics through a fun and creative way, the best tool for children. The reason for the price point is not only the quality of the materials used but also the number of games that are present within the kit itself. All the materials used are colorful and intriguing for children and are also very high quality, meaning that breaking after extended usage is not an issue. The storage for the used game pieces is also a very welcome detail.

I would also like to mention that while Osmo seems to be a digital game, it does not cause children to be addicted to digital stimuli. While playing, children are continually messing with numbers, letters, and shapes with their hands. They also carry out instructions that are given to them on a piece of paper. That means that your conscience can be clear when giving your child this game.

Osmo is an excellent tool for children to get acquainted with mathematics through a Montessori style of learning. That is because, for example, they physically add things together when they are learning addition. They also separate things from each other when learning subtraction. That leads to children understanding the fundamental reasoning behind mathematical operations.

It makes children’s brains work hard through the tangram provided in one of the containers. That helps them understand geometry through a very fundamental and entry-level activity.

The Osmo Genius Kit is an ideal tool for parents who are conducting their homeschooling.

On Osmo’s website, there are a plethora of ideas for different games as well. Using the libraries there, you can discover a whole world of other games and ideas. If you do a detailed search regarding Osmo, you can buy the most appropriate kit for your child and age level.

In summary, Osmo is a perfect game for helping children understand math and increasing their mathematical self-esteem. It could be the ideal gift for birthdays.

Mathlink Cubes

Learn more about Mathlink Cubes

Mathlink Cubes might be the most straightforward tool for mathematics and geometry education. All the pieces fit perfectly and easily with each other and can be separated with ease as well.

It is instrumental when grasping fundamental ideas such as addition and subtraction. For example, with these cubes, the problem, 10–5, becomes simple and more fun. It is always easier to understand an abstract process with a reality-based demonstration anyway.

Mathlinks isn’t just for math either; It can also be used as a tool for learning geometry. For example, children can make a cube without even realizing that they have. They can also create geometric designs just as quickly. As you all know, most children obsess over symmetry, and with these little cubes, they can make just about any symmetric shape they want.

Each set comes with ten pieces in 10 different colors, adding up to 100 pieces. If you want to spend more time and make more shapes, I suggest buying multiple sets as well. Having at least 300–400 pieces are better, in my opinion.

In summary, Mathlink Cubes is an ideal tool for learning and teaching math and geometry to children.

I’ve been eyeing some other math games for a while that you can find below. I will be adding them to this list after I start playing with them.
