Robotic

For the past couple of days I have been working on Song Without Words by Fritz Spindler and I love the piece. The main attraction being that it is so simple but sounds beautiful. Learning it was not that hard, and while getting in right end to end, at speed, might not be so easy for me, it was far easier than anything else that I have encountered in the LCM book yet. Here’s my recording.

Up until now, just being able to play the piece has been satisfactory for me. But when you come across a piece that you like, you really want it to sound nice when you play it. Unfortunately, when I play, it sounds like a robot is playing. Just listen to the difference between the quality of my recording, and the recording below.

For starters, the piece has to be played at a faster tempo than I am playing it. When this guy is playing it, you can actually hear the RH melody, while in my case it is lost. I also totally ignored all the dynamics. Well, I tried to play them, but was not able to, so did a recording without them.

When I try to play the dynamics, I have to think a lot. I have to carefully look at all the cryptic signs on the sheet and I am never sure how loudly to play a note if it says mp at one place and mf at another. I think it’s impossible to do at speed for me. But even when I go slower, its very hard. But that is something I need to start working on, or I will never get my head around it.

So I will continue to work on this piece for the rest of the week. Will try to play it faster. Will also try to play it slower, with the right dynamics. Let’s see how it turns out.

How I Learnt Piano

Learning A-Z was easy. Learning A-G seems harder. This is how I am doing it.
