Swing It

Another day, another piece and another challenge. This time it is swinging rhythm. The piece is called Square-O and the instructions say that I need to learn to swing the rhythm before I can play it. I asked my teacher what that means and he showed me how to swing the rhythm. Now the very first problem with swinging is that counting gets next to impossible if you are not very good at it. So I just picked up a recording of the piece, and tried to play it by listening to the rhythm instead of trying to count. That works but don’t know how far can that take me. I think I need to spend time learning this properly.

I found a couple of videos explaining the concept. One of them goes to the very basic, the other focusses on Jazz music and is a bit more complicated. But they are both very good resources for learning. Here they are.

I have already started learning the piece, but will try to make time to practice the way advised in the videos so that is doesn’t seem so hard after a while.

How I Learnt Piano

Learning A-Z was easy. Learning A-G seems harder. This is how I am doing it.
