In TRANS 2019 Conference, Dr. Nissim Darvish, the Senior Managing Director of OrbiMed Advisors, shared his professional experience in the healthcare field. OrbiMed has invested in the healthcare industry for over 20 years, and it has exciting ideas to share.

The Booming Healthcare Industry

Healthcare is a growing industry with more patients, more drugs, and much more innovations than ever before. Patients are constantly demanding for new therapies. Therefore, there are more supplies developing, either from universities or companies. In the US, the number of drug approvals of FDA each year increased from 24 to 59 in the past fifteen years. Also, innovation in the healthcare industry is booming. For instance, in 2018, there were 128 approved mAbs (Monoclonal antibodies) about 5,500 ongoing trials. This shows that overall, innovation in biopharma has grown at a rapid rate.

Big Companies are Encouraging Innovations

It is encouraging that innovations in healthcare are supported by large capitalization. Statistics show that large companies are willing to invest healthcare startups. In 2018, the investments surpassed those in 2017 by over 50 percent. Among these investments, most of the exit strategies were Initial Public Offerings (IPO) or Merges and Acquisitions (M&A), which have driven businesses to expand.

Future Trends in Healthcare

Today, the top healthcare trends are hematology, oncology, and neurology. They were the top three therapeutic areas with drug approvals in the past few years.

How about the future?

The relationship between human health and computer has become closer. According to a survey conducted in 2019, the top three issues in the hospitals were all related to the Internet: cybersecurity, telehealth, and interoperability. Dr. Darvish also pointed out several sectors that he had confidence in: RNA therapy, off-the shelf cell, microbiomes, gene editing, and so on.

In brief, Dr. Nissim Darvish talked about the growing trends, investments, and the future aspects of the healthcare industry in his speech. He mentioned that the new players joining this industry are particularly thrilling. Companies like Amazon, Berkshire, JP Morgan, Apple, are blurring the traditional boundaries of specialists and starting to enter the healthcare industry. Dr. Darvish is positive that healthcare is an exciting industry, and that it will only continue to flourish.
