First hybrid motor ship in Italy, now it’s the turn of San Cristoforo. Via Mezzopienonews the Italian Network of Positivity.

The San Cristoforo is the first Italian eco-sustainable ferry equipped to transport vehicles and passengers on Lake Maggiore.

Built in 1965 by the Breda shipyard in Venice, it can carry 22 vehicles and 420 passengers. It is a double-ended ferry, and the direction of travel may switch. It is possible to steer the ferry both from the bow and the stern and vice-versa. Moreover, thanks to the latest energy upgrading, it has become hybrid propulsion and full electric.

“The refitting of the San Cristoforo ferry is one of the goals achieved. The progressive conversion of the fleet towards electric hybrid propulsion is an irreversible path of innovation and transformation carried out by Gestione Navigazione Laghi. It has already been undertaken for several years and constitutes an essential guideline for the future development of our service. ” Said Alessandro Acquafredda, general manager of the Government Management of Navigazione Laghi. The San Cristoforo is not the first to undergo ecological refitting. But the motorship Topazio has preceded the small ferry in sustainable refitting innovation.

The fleet renewal process is in full swing: in fact, two new refits and the construction of four hybrid boats for navigation in the Maggiore, Como, and Garda Lakes are already underway. In addition to the FEP (Full Electric Project) project presented to the Ministry to assemble a further three new fully electric motor ships.
