📰 Let’s Take a Look at the News From The Mobile World in January
❗️The first event of the new year Mobidictum Network Istanbul 2023
2023’s first major event in the gaming industry, Mobidictum Network Istanbul, took place on January 13th at Point Hotel Barbaros. More than 220 brands and 300+ participating guests attended the event. Mobidictum Network Istanbul closed with 9 sessions, more than 250 meetings, and a cocktail. The sessions started with the opening speech of Batuhan Avucan, Founder and General Manager of Mobidictum, with the participation of 19 panelists.
The content of the event included tracking games with AWS, ad monetization, ad budget planning, scaling hyper & hybrid-casual games, user buying perspectives, and how to overcome a recession.
The next event will be held on March 17, 2023, in Izmir.
❗️8 Million Dollar Investment to Turkish Mobile Game Developer Ace Games
Turkish mobile game developer Ace Games received an $8 million investment from Re-Pie in the same financing round as Playtika’s acquisition of a minority stake in the company for $25 million. This investment highlights the growing interest in the significant growth seen in the Turkish mobile gaming sector in recent years.
Although the Turkish economy has faced challenges, the mobile gaming sector has remained strong and even continued to grow. With this investment in Ace Games and other recent investments and acquisitions, the Turkish mobile gaming industry is poised to become a major player in the mobile gaming world.
❗Playtika Offers $810 Million for Angry Birds Producer Rovio
Playtika Holding Corp., the developer of free-to-play mobile games such as Bingo Blitz, has offered to acquire Rovio Entertainment Oyj, the maker of the popular mobile game series Angry Birds. According to the deal worth about 810 million dollars, Playtika will acquire Rovio’s shares for 9.05 Euros per share in cash.
The Israeli company first made the acquisition offer on November 16th and offered 8.50 Euros per share. Following the announcement of the acquisition offer, Rovio’s shares rose 34% to €7.60, while Playtika’s shares fell 6.4%.
Rovio has not held any prior discussions with Playtika and said it plans to evaluate the offer before deciding how to proceed. The non-binding offer was 60% higher than Rovio’s market capitalization at the close of trading on Thursday and was not subject to any financing conditions.
Overall, the potential acquisition highlights the ongoing consolidation in the gaming industry as companies look to reach new audiences and capitalize on popular intellectual property. It is not yet clear whether Rovio will accept Playtika’s offer, but it is possible that the studio could receive a higher offer depending on Playtika’s willingness to acquire the company.
Launched in 2009, the Rovio Angry Birds series accounts for more than 80% of the Finnish company’s acquisitions and is the world’s first mobile game to reach 1 billion downloads.
❗Tencent to bring PUBG Mobile Super League to Southeast Asia
PUBG owner Tencent is planning to launch a new franchise eSports tournament in Southeast Asia, according to eSports news. The new tournament, called the PUBG Mobile Super League (PMSL), will replace the previous PMPL (PUBG Mobile Pro-League) SEA Championship and will allow participating teams to share in the revenue.
Commenting on Tencent’s plans, eSports observer Mark Cai noted that they are in stark contrast to the struggles faced by other eSports franchises such as the Overwatch League. Teams participating in the Overwatch League are reporting declining revenues and high franchising fees leading to potential legal action.
Cai’s comments highlight the potential for Tencent’s new league to be more open and inclusive, providing opportunities for a wider range of teams to participate. This will be beneficial for players and provide a more dynamic and competitive environment compared to closed ecosystems established by companies like Blizzard.
Whether PMSL can expand beyond Southeast Asia remains to be seen, as PUBG Mobile’s popularity is region-specific and already has a dedicated eSports following. However, if these reports are accurate, it suggests that the mobile eSports scene may be more resilient than other platforms.
Tencent has previously committed to franchising in the region, so an official announcement regarding PMSL is likely to be made in the near future.
❗TapNation Expands to Turkey, Preparing to Revolutionize the Mobile Gaming Industry
French publisher TapNation is set to open new offices in Turkey in 2023, following a successful year in 2022 in which it surpassed 800 million games and was listed as one of the top 20 game publishers by AppMagic. The company, which was recognized for its expansion efforts at the Android App Experience Summit, plans to continue its growth by increasing its development, analytics, and creative capabilities. The expansion into Turkey allows TapNation to capitalize on the country’s wealth of local talent and expand its market reach by establishing a presence in a key industry hotspot.
The company also plans to implement new features, such as in-game cryptocurrencies, and build partnerships with metaverse companies.
