New Report Finds Cybersecurity Not a Top Priority for Healthcare Despite Increase in Cyberattacks

A new report by CyberMDX and Philips has found that cybersecurity is not a priority investment among healthcare organisations, despite the rise in ransomware attacks on the sector. The Perspectives in Healthcare Security Report looks at attitudes, concerns, and impacts on medical device security as well as cybersecurity across large and midsize healthcare delivery organisations.

The study surveyed 130 hospital executives in Information Technology (IT) and Information Security (IS) roles in the US, as well BioMed technicians and engineers. The respondents, who averaged 15 years of experience in their fields, provided insight into the current state of medical device security within hospitals, and highlighted the challenges their organisations face. It’s no secret that cyberattacks against critical infrastructure are increasing. The recent attacks against water treatment plants, pipelines, vital hospital systems and food processing facilities have all made recent headlines and demonstrate the vulnerability of all types of critical infrastructure providers.

Recognizing the disruptive and destructive nature of these attacks, the United States Federal Government recently released a new DHS/TSA Security Directive, “Security Directive Pipeline-2021–01, Enhancing Pipeline Cybersecurity” with an effective date of May 28, 2021 to May 28, 2022. The White House has also warned critical infrastructure companies to step up their cybersecurity programs. (Source)

Survey Says Multi-Cloud Is New Normal, But Skills Shortage Still Persists

HashiCorp published its first-ever cloud strategy survey, finding that multi-cloud is the new normal despite being hindered by lack of multi-cloud skills and overall cloud security concerns. In announcing the survey report, HashiCorp highlighted the finding that 76 percent of respondents are already using multi-cloud implementations, while 86 percent expect to do so within two years.

“This overwhelming majority of respondents reported using more than one public or private cloud, making multi-cloud no longer some vague or aspirational goal, but rather their everyday reality,” the company said in introducing the HashiCorp State of Cloud Strategy Survey. (Source)

Memorial Health System Experiences Cyberattack

“IT noticed irregularities in the data system,” said Memorial Health System President and CEO Scott Cantley at a press conference. “Security protocols call for the shut down of our Information Technology system.” Memorial Health System is working with security partners, including the FBI and Homeland Security, to restore information operations as quickly as possible, he said.

The irregularities were part of a ransomware attack, much like what happened recently with the Colonial Pipeline cyber security attack. “We are really pleased with the help from the government agencies,” he said. “Hopefully within in the next 24–48 hours, they will be able to tell us what we need to know about who hacked us.”.
