Providers Drive Into the Core Network Fast Lane as 5G Race Accelerates

Into the second half of 2021, 5G trends are continuing to accelerate, with 5G standalone (SA) core evaluation, testing and launch activities growing significantly across all geographic regions, and considerable demand for managed and anything-as-a-service (XaaS) solutions, according to research from network test, assurance and analytics systems provider Spirent Communications.

In an addendum to its 5G 2021: Market drivers, insights & consideration, Spirent took analysis and takeaways from more than 1,400 global 5G engagements, including over 400 new engagements during the first half of 2021. The report drew on Spirent’s work with worldwide service providers, network equipment manufacturers, governments and device makers, providing an update to developments in the journey to global 5G. China Leads in 5G Smartphones and Technology

China, the world’s biggest 5G market that accounts for over 70 percent of all users and 5G base stations, is pushing ahead with next-generation technology. Already with over 400 million 5G users and 1 million base stations, China will continue pushing 5G development and innovations based on the next-generation network, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in an online conference on Monday.

In the first eight months, China’s 5G phone sales hit 168 million units, up 80 percent year on year. The country now has 1.04 million 5G base stations to cover all major cities. In August, 5G phone sales accounted for 74 percent of all models, according to the ministry. 5G is a key technology boosting the digital economy and upgrading the broader economic structure, said Minister Xiao Yaqing. Samsung Launches 5G Smartphone with Quantum Cryptography to Protect Customers’ Data

Samsung and South Korea’s SK Telecom have collaborated to unveil the Samsung Galaxy Quantum2 smartphone that is equipped with quantum technology. It can facilitate safe online transactions and quantum protection to apps available on the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Quantum2 smartphone has an in-built Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) chip developed by Swiss Quantum-Safe technology provider ID Quantique. The chip leverages logical mathematics and algorithms to create random cryptographic keys that are hard to crack. (Source)

Verizon Expands 5G Home Internet and Mobility to More Customers

Customers are getting more 5G in more places on their phones and in their homes. 5G Ultra Wideband mobility service is now available in Harrisburg, PA; Athens, GA; Orlando, FL and Fremont, CA, which means 5G Ultra Wideband is now available in parts of 82 cities. 5G Home is now available in five additional cities. With the addition of these new cities, Verizon’s 5G Home Internet is now available in parts of 57 cities.

Customers in these four new 5G Ultra Wideband mobility markets can experience ultra-fast wireless speeds, allowing them to download and stream movies and TV shows in seconds, 5 experience console quality gaming on the go, and take advantage of new immersive customer experiences never before available wirelessly. Secret to Apple’s iPhone Sales Boom: Big 5G Deals From Wireless Carriers

Apple Inc.’s iPhone sales have been booming since it launched models last year with ultrafast 5G cellular capability — boosted in large part by wireless companies’ attractive offers to get customers using the new technology.

Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc. have rolled out huge subsidies over the past year to retain customers and reduce the cost of buying new iPhones so users will upgrade to their 5G services. As Apple prepares to show off a new crop of 5G-enabled iPhones Tuesday, a big question is how long that expensive fight among the carriers for customers will continue to propel iPhone sales.
