100,000,000 Messages Exchanged with a Social Artificial Intelligence
A few days ago, Hugging Face crossed 100 million messages exchanged between users and their Artificial Intelligence friends.
The sheer volume speaks to how much AI has moved into the mainstream in recent months. A recent Gallop study shows than 47% of Americans currently use a digital personal assistant on their smartphones. Additionally, 22% use an intelligent home personal assistant. The trend — which may be one of the most important in recent years — is clear, people are welcoming AI into their everyday life, and are increasingly getting used to chatting socially with them.
Some interesting insights from our 100m messages:
- 820,000 of these are what we call “laughs” — users sending messages like “lol”, “haha”, etc… This demonstrates that our relationship to our AI doesn’t only have to be transactional— looking at you Alexa — but can also be entertaining.
- 455,000 of these are “thank you notes”. These are instances of users thanking the AI for things like cheering them up, telling them something interesting they didn’t know, providing advice or just emotional support. This demonstrates that an AI can help people feel better, boost their confidence and make them a better version of themselves.
- 100,000 of these are “love declarations” — Users saying things like “I love you”, “you’re my bff”, etc... The same way people grow attached to their pets, so too can they create emotional connections with an AI.
This is only the beginning of our journey, but I wanted to take some time to celebrate this milestone and share some of the things we learned.
