When discussing late summer flowers, it would be remiss to leave out the Rudbeckia group. Until recently I was under the misconception that most of these bright faced beauties are perennials. Not so, a wiser colleague advised me. What actually happens is that many self-seed generously. I believe that there may be a couple of Rudbeckia varieties are are, actually perennial, but I have to admit I’m not sure which.

Regardless of whether they are annual, or perennial, Rudbeckias of all stripes are very welcome in my garden. In addition to providing colour, many insects and birds love them.
