Becoming Actively Aware of Consumption
To care for future generations and to make sure we leave this planet in better shape is sometimes a difficult concept for some to grasp. Many feel they will gain nothing from working for future generations and that they should just worry about themselves. This has lead to a culture of hyper-individualization that has just fueled the consumeristic and materialistic values our societies practice.
We need to make a shift to becoming actively aware of how we spend money, where our products come from, where are food comes from, what impact we have on the environment because of our habits, and how we can change. We must always remember that change is possible and that we are in control of our actions. It took time for this culture of consumerism to take root and it will take time for it to be changed, but the main point is that we are able to change it.

Caring for future generations may seem farfetched but those future generations are our future as well. We are all one human family and to disregard this fact can be truly destructive. To treat this planet as if we have multiple at our expense will prove to be detrimental to the health and well-being of our species, and to all life on this planet.
We can make these necessary changes. We can begin this process of becoming more aware of our habits and what external costs they come with. We need to remember to have moderation in our approach to change and not expect anything too quick. It will take time to rid our societies of materialism and consumerism.

A top-down and a bottom-up approach will be needed. Each one of us can make a difference and this is a fact. Our own habits can be emulated by others. A creative, innovative, and authentic approach will be needed to bring about this change. Sustainable lifestyle decisions will be necessary for the well-being of future generations. Our kids, and their kids, and their kids, and so on will feel the effects of our decisions today.
