Trump’s Rise is a Sign of Our Education System’s Decline

It has been decades in the making, but our education system is not what it used to be (and it is no accident as to how it got this way). With Trump securing a nomination sending many Americans, and the world, into panic mode we need to look how this joke of a candidate rose to power.

We have to admit, education has not been a top priority in the US. Consumerism, materialism, and other superficial aspects of society have taken over as the top concerns of many as the education system has found itself being degraded. When the top 25 hedge fund managers make more than all of the kindergarten teachers combined in the US you know where our priorities stand.

So, we should not be too surprised to see someone like Trump rise to power among a nation where the main concerns are what shoes to buy next, what is happening on next week’s episode, or how much data is left on our plan. This is precisely way a person like Trump is able to rise to power and why he is able to prey upon such a like percentage of the population.

Supporting someone like Trump and allowing our education system to continue to decline is far from sustainable. Uneducated consumers living the materialistic life is far from sustainable and the opposite of what we need to help combat climate change and environmental destruction. Knowledgeable and informed citizens are needed to bring about the authentic change that we are already late on starting. We don’t need mindless drones falling in line at the check-out line at the store.

We can all make a difference.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and food garden efforts at schools across the country are amazing movements but more must be done. A strong investment (from each of our homes, from our communities, from our local and state governments) into our our school systems must happen. An effort from all levels must be pushed for to move our nation in the right direction. Honestly, we should be embarrassed that someone like Trump has been able to find success like he has. We should be even more embarrassed at how our education system has dwindled away. Now, we are not only the bully of the world dropping bombs to get our messages across, we are now becoming a joke to the world.
