Digitalization continues to substantially alter the way universities provide their services and run their operations. While digitalization opens many opportunities, sinultaneously it is important not to forget the people who eventually use the services.

Digital service platforms at universities have a variety of different needs that they should fulfil — for example, students may want to find interesting courses to sign up for (and do this with one click) or they may want to find information about network-building volunteering opportunities. Similarly, university’s alumni, research staff, and other personnel have their own varying needs. This raises an important question: how should the different services be implemented and visualized so that they would meet users' needs?

Hellon was chosen as an independent partner by a leading university in Finland to ensure that the voice of the user would be heard and remain strong throughout a massive communication and collaboration platform renewal process of the university.

Our approach at Hellon is to explore services always from a holistic perspective that allows us to understand the bottlenecks as well as the highs and lows of the current processes. Most importantly, we use exploratory reseach methods to uncover the actual needs of different users.

Our process is also always collaborative. Co-creation means exploring opportunities together with stakeholders, customers and end users in creative workshops, generating ideas together, testing ideas and prototyping and piloting them. We believe that best results and true impact for our clients can only happen when the process and ideas are owned together. We also want to share our experiences and competencies to our clients to support their internal capability building and increasing awareness of service design possibilities from strategic level to service frontline.

Having worked intensively with the different stakeholders involved in the communication and collaboration platform renewal, as for our next step, Hellon will arrange and facilitate an open Service Design Hackathon to create use cases that will form the base of the future platform. The hackathon is be open for anybody with a creative mind and interest in creating user cases. At the beginning of the hackathon, we will present the user profiles and design drivers as a basis for use case development. Eventually, the use cases developed during the hackathon will serve as the foundation for the next development stages and guide the technical solutions behind the future communication and collaboration platform. As a prize, the winner team will receive iPads (32gt Wifi)!

If you are passionate about human centric concept development, please join us at the hackathon!

Contact Anna Pyyluoma (+358 40 831 3826, anna.pyyluoma@hellon.com) to enrol or if you have any questions about the event.

The Service Design Hackathon will take place 14th of June from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm at our office in Pursimiehenkatu 26 C, Helsinki.
