Saying Hi to Yourself

The essayist Michel de Montaigne wrote about the “soul’s capacity to keep itself company,” as he called it. And he wrote that the “greatest thing in the world is to know how to be yourself.” I suppose the fuller phrase there is “how to know yourself and then manage to sit in a quiet place with that self.”

Isn’t that why we stress-eat and binge-watch and doom-scroll and play endless video games and drink and do drugs: because…
