Don’t Think You Can Combine Mathematics and Humanitarianism? Think Again and Join Our Open House this February to Learn More From Our Students!

January 28, New York, New York — The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs will host the Fordham College Rose Hill Major Declaration Event for Humanitarian Studies Majors and Minors on February 6th, 2019 from 2:30 PM — 3:45 PM in the IIHA’s Canisius Gallery.

The Humanitarian Studies Program provides students with the technical knowledge and analytical tools necessary to examine and critique a wide range of humanitarian activities, including food aid, water and sanitation programming, medical assistance, and refugee settlements. The combination of rigorous interdisciplinary coursework and experiential learning opportunities prepare students for a host of graduate studies and careers, such as disaster relief, global public health, human rights, and international law. Additionally, the IIHA’s New York City location provides students with exposure to various United Nations Agencies, the US Mission to the UN, international NGOs, and prominent research institutions.

Natalie Ward, Fordham University Senior completing a BS in Mathematics and the 5th year MS in Humanitarian Studies program shares her story:

I enrolled in the HA program because I wanted to gain multi-sector knowledge, cultural understanding, and practical skills to enable me to make meaningful contributions to humanitarian operations.

I applied to be a part of the program during the second semester of my junior year and began classes at the Institute during the first semester of my senior year.

The five-year program is a unique and incredible opportunity for me to take graduate courses during my senior year. These courses will count simultaneously toward the completion of my bachelor’s degree and master’s degree. It’s amazing that in only five years, I will be able to complete my BS in Mathematics and my MS in Humanitarian Studies. My plan for the future is to investigate how I can apply my mathematical skills to the humanitarian field, potentially through becoming a statistician for a research or M&E team.

The graduate level courses have challenged me to critically evaluate and examine the political, legal, social, and economic frameworks that make up the humanitarian sector. The HA cohort of students are so welcoming and open; I feel very comfortable asking questions, speaking my mind, and engaging in debates during classes together.

The Humanitarian Studies Major Declaration Event will provide socially and globally conscious students from all disciplines who are undecided or enrolled in diverse and complimentary majors and minors an open forum to speak with current Humanitarian Studies students and faculty. By engaging with current students, this event will help other students learn about the courses, internships, and prospective graduate school opportunities and career endeavors Humanitarian Studies students are pursuing.
