IIHA To Host “From Camps to Streets: Adapting Humanitarian Operations for Urban Areas” Webinar
September 14, New York — On September 22, 2020 at 10:00am EST, the IIHA will host the zoom webinar “From Camps to Streets: Adapting Humanitarian Operations for Urban Areas,” with IIHA Instructor Rick Fernandez.
In addition to teaching the upcoming Fordham Graduate School of Arts and Sciences course on Humanitarian Operations this Spring 2021, Rick Fernandez has experience serving as both a Program Development Officer and International Protection Officer with Nonviolent Peaceforce in South Sudan, a Program Manager with IBM’s Corporate Service Corps Program, and a planner for the NYC Emergency Management Department.
During the webinar, Rick will address the key questions of:
Aren’t urban humanitarian operations the same as humanitarian operations in camp and rural settings?
How do the needs of people displaced from urban areas differ from those displaced from rural areas?
What new coordination structures are required to foster collaboration between formal, informal, and spontaneous actors providing humanitarian assistance?

From the Countryside to City Streets: Adapting Humanitarian Operations for Urban Areas

The UN estimates that by 2050 approximately 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. Therefore, to have the ability “to prevent or alleviate human suffering arising out of disaster or conflict” humanitarian structures and processes, primarily designed for rural and camp settings, will need to be adapted for use in urban areas. Instructor Rick Fernandez will discuss how humanitarians can get ready for operating in urban areas and more via Zoom.

About the IIHA
