Horses Saved My Life
And would help me help others too
From around the time I knew what a horse was I felt connected to them. I would draw them over and over and over again, and hang pictures and posters in my room.
From the time I was gifted words, I would plead to have a horse. And, at 11, I would be gifted a horse.
You might assume, as most would, that a parent would research “what is the best first horse to buy for a child”.
Well, for one, there was no such thing as the internet at this time, and specialized books that explored the qualities and characteristics a first horse should have were in short supply.
Living as rurally as we did, a lot of information came from newspapers. One highly coveted rural newspaper at the time was The Western Producer. This was a weekly paper that published news of interest to western Canadian farmers and it had an awesome classified section. I would get this paper from my grandparents and pour through the classifieds looking for my unicorn.
One day I came across an ad that read:
9 yo Half-Arabian grey gelding. 15.3 HH. Used in 4-H and endurance racing. Located in Southern Alberta $2500
