[My parents] both had very mission focused lives. My father was a civil servant when the civil service was still something of honesty in Pakistan. He was jailed as a political prisoner, and we had to flee the country here to the UK during the independence war in the 1970s…

My mother at the time was a university professor. They set up things like the Bangladesh Association for Community Education, which was a grass-roots education project trying to tackle the high drop-out rate from primary school. I suppose growing up it never occurred to me that you wouldn’t have that commitment to changing where you are for better.
