It was my birthday but I feeling a bit down — we’d had a lot of setbacks with the business and it was a tough time. Then I get this call from a guy called Rehan — the first student I helped to find money for his course.

He was a difficult case because, as a Muslim, he wasn’t comfortable with fundraising and I had to get the support of the British Pakistan Foundation and persuade the university to take him. He told me he’d been accepted onto the Jaguar Land Rover leadership programme and had been able to buy his mum back all the jewels she had sold to support him through his studies.

That made my day.
