Americans have recently been switching to freelancing en masse: it’s suggested that by 2020, freelancers will make up at least 43% of the US workforce. If you’ve been thinking about going freelance as well, here are 7 reasons that might help you make up your mind:

Make your own decisions

Freelancing and entrepreneurship allow you to be your own boss. Forget about the times your every step was subject to micromanagement: you’re the one in charge now, responsible to no one but your clients and yourself. Feels good, doesn’t it?

Work whenever you want

Say goodbye to 9 to 5 routine: you can finally work whenever you want to — not whenever you’re told to. Got a little tired in the middle of the week? You can take a day off and make up for it any other day, even on the weekend. The best thing about working on your own schedule is that you’re allowed to devote yourself to your job at your most productive hours.

Work wherever you want

You’re no longer chained to your office table: freelancing makes you able to choose the working environment that suits you best. Feel stuck in your home? Pick up your laptop and go to the nearby coffee shop to shake things up. Feel homesick? Welcome back. You can even work while on vacation somewhere exotic. This is the definition of personal freedom.

Escape corporate culture

No more pointless “business meetings”. No more silly office parties no one really wants to attend. No more unpaid overtime. Once you become a freelancer or set up your business, you can liberate yourself from the obligation to comply and play by the corporate rules.

Take control over jobs & clients

When working for someone else, your choices in regard to projects and clients are restricted: you can’t choose clients to work with and projects to work on. Freelancing and entrepreneurship grant you that choice: if you don’t like something about the job you’re offered, you can simply skip it.

Set your own rates

No one can estimate the real value of your work better than you. Working for yourself allows you to set your own rates based on the difficulty of the job, contract terms, etc. Time to say goodbye to the flat rate: from now on, the more you work, the more you get paid.

Live your dream

These words speak for themselves. Freelancing sets you free from everything you hate about working for someone else. This freedom is not without its disadvantages, but it’s still freedom. Switching to freelance might take courage, but it certainly pays off.
