The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black communities has become apparent as U.S. Black-owned small businesses were twice as likely to close during the early months of the pandemic than small businesses nationally. Additionally, there is a funding gap — only 1% of VC-backed startups are Black.

In partnership with The National Black Chamber of Commerce, humble is hosting a shared virtual pop-up experience, Backing Black Businesses, to convene innovators to discuss how to remove the barriers of access to capital, education, and network for entrepreneurs.

The intent is to address the inequities and isolation compounded by COVID-19 that makes convening harder for startups. In particular, Rise of the Rest Seed Fund’s David Hall and OHUB’s Chairman & CEO Rodney Sampson will be discussing details of their $2,000,000 virtual pitch competition for US-based startups led by Black founders outside of Silicon Valley, New York City, and Boston.

Panelists

David Hall is the Managing Partner at Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund and is responsible for investment sourcing, execution, and oversight of the Fund’s portfolio companies. David began his career with Revolution in 2006, serving as an investment professional across the firm, including as an investor with Revolution Growth and Revolution Ventures.

Rodney Sampson is heralded as the leading inclusive innovation, entrepreneurship and investment ecosystem builder. Throughout his twenty year entrepreneurial career, Sampson has co-founded startup companies that have overcome the odds by collectively raising more than $20 million in angel and venture capital, created hundreds of new jobs and generated tens of millions in revenue before acquisition or going public.

The Pop-Up includes a panel discussion followed by a Chatroulette-style video networking. The virtual event takes place on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, 2:30–3:30 PM ET. Register by clicking here.
