WNBA veteran Marissa Coleman has joined the humble crew. Marissa will be interning with us during the offseason to help us better understand the intersection between professional sports, technology, and investment. A restaurant owner in the Mellow Mushroom franchise and a graduate of the Crossover Into Business program at HBS, Marissa’s a proven entrepreneur with her sights set on a career in venture capital (VC).

Raised in Cheltenham, Md, Marissa has always had two passions: basketball and business. Marissa attended the University of Maryland where she was a key contributor in winning the 1st National Championship in Maryland Women’s Basketball history. Marissa graduated in 2009 with a B.S and left the university as the 2nd all-time leading scorer and rebounder, as well as a two time All-American. In 2009, Marissa was drafted second overall in the WNBA draft by the Washington Mystics.

“In everything I do, it is important for me to be surrounded by genuine people with impactful ideas and goals. The humble team encompasses those ideals. I am so thankful to humble for the opportunity to break into unchartered waters and to learn from such a knowledgeable group. I’m looking forward to the experience.” — Marissa Coleman

Understanding the power and importance of giving back, Marissa started an Amature Athletic Union (AAU) organization for girls in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The goal is to provide young girls with the tools needed to succeed on and off the court. As well, Marissa uses her personal experiences to mentor these young girls, show them the importance of being well-rounded and that it is possible to achieve your dreams through hard work and determination. To date, the organization has an ongoing relationship with over 200 girls.

Accomplishing many of her on-court goals, in 2016 Marissa began setting her sights on accomplishing her business goals. She, along with her two business partners, opened a Mellow Mushroom franchise in Roanoke, Va. Having immense and impactful goals as a businesswoman, Marissa began setting her sights on VC.

“What excites me the most about joining and working with the humble team is their passion of targeting underrepresented minorities and communities. It is a goal of mine to have a meaningful impact with those groups in particular. This internship will provide me with the knowledge and tools to achieve my lofty goals. On top of that, I get to work with some pretty dope individuals!” — Marissa Coleman

Marissa’s end goal is to be able to create a blueprint for other female athletes looking to get into the business world. Furthermore, it is extremely important to Marissa that she create economic opportunities and mentorship for underrepresented minorities and women.

I look forward to learning from Marissa and expect her to make great strategic and cultural contributions to the crew here at humble. Please join me in welcoming Marissa to the team!
