In partnership with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Ogilvy and humble ventures launched an innovation challenge.

Phase 1 of the BioSecurity Challenge opened to the community in December 2019. We have assessed all of the submissions and shared our initial learnings. Today, we are pleased to announce Phase 2 and the chance for the winner(s) to get a Proof-of-Concept funded up to $30,000 each.

“We are super excited to launch this global challenge to help address a real problem, not just for Wallenius Wilhelmsen, but for the whole industry. With the help of Ogilvy and humble, we hope to engage global innovators to identify viable innovative solutions.” — Alex Conjour, VP of Port and Cargo at Wallenius Wilhelmsen

The challenge is to provide solutions for the identification and treatment of stink bugs and other invasive species in the shipping industry. Countries have been doubling down on regulations to control the spread of invasive species. We are interested in collaborating with anyone that might have ideas around biosecurity as it relates to invasive pest identification and treatment. We are seeking input from individuals from the following fields: academia, startups, venture capital, private equity, shipping & logistics, agriculture, biotechnology, entomology, or large enterprise technology companies.

“Sustainable eradication sounds like an oxymoron, but it defines the innovative solutions we need to combat the spread of invasive species like the stink bug. We are looking for help to fortify the supply chain against bio-security risk with a targeted environmentally friendly treatment solution for RoRo cargo.” — Alex Conjour, VP of Port and Cargo at Wallenius Wilhelmsen

The BioSecurity Challenge provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore innovative and impactful solutions for shipping contamination-free cargo. Submit your idea today or learn more by visiting BioSecurityChallenge.com.

More Details

What: Wallenius Wilhelmsen is looking for solutions to identify and treat the issue of stink bugs and other invasive species in the shipping industry. Cargo must be free of the species upon destination arrival.

Why: The brown marmorated stink bug was accidentally introduced to much of the world through its native Japan, Korea, and China. These stink bugs and other invasive species have negatively impacted global agriculture, supply chain, and shipping with no universal solution in sight. Demand for increased biosecurity across the globe is growing; thus, countries are tightening regulations to keep invasive species out. Invasive species, in the United States alone, cost more than $120 billion in damages each year.

When: Challenge closes March 25

Prize: $30,000 to winner(s)
