Welcome to Humboldt Legends
Our mission is to ensure that our community benefits from our success, to serve as an example for, and actively promote a responsible national industry.
The founders of Humboldt Legends were among the first new settlers in Humboldt County in the early 1970s as part of the back-to-the-land movement. We found our way to Humboldt — some by way of the Grateful Dead — where we purchased affordable land that had been ravaged by the logging industry over the prior decades.
Most of our kitchen gardens had a few cannabis plants, propagated from low-grade, seeded Mexican marijuana. We made our own soil, compost and learned to grow better with each season.
During the winter months, we left the farms to see the rest of the world. Soon, intrepid travelers brought the first Southeast Asian seeds home with them. A higher grade of marijuana was grown.
By happenstance, a few unfertilized plants matured and the first “sinsemilla” (unseeded marijuana flowers) were harvested and enjoyed. It just so happens that Humboldt has a perfect blend of diverse topography and microclimates for growing marijuana. Over time, Humboldt County developed a well-earned global reputation for the finest cannabis on the planet.
From the beginning, we embraced an obligation to fight for social justice and give back to our poor, rural community. An excerpt from a letter penned by one of our founding farmers:
“ In 1996, California was the first state to legalize medical cannabis, and Humboldt has been the primary source of medical grade cannabis for the last two decades — we’ve ensured safe access to needy patients.
… I don’t need to remind you that the fight for freedom has been prevalent in every aspect of our county’s history and culture… [As seen in] our continuing efforts to provide our community with dozens of its own schools, health care, volunteer fire departments, and community centers.
We fought the timber companies together to insure best management practices and to stop herbicide spraying; we fought the county to allow reasonable construction practices without the undue burden of restrictive code enforcement;
We formed and funded non-profits to fight for social justice, environmental protection, and to express ourselves in the arts. We have fought to provide safe access to a plant with untold benefits for society. And, we have done it all with ‘community financing,’ non-violently, creatively, and with a sense of humor.”
Humboldt Legends is committed to taking our mission to the next level. Our company alone embodies hundreds of years, spanning three generations of cannabis cultivation experience.
