Humio at Logibec: A Healthy Look at Analytics
Flexibility in Your Logs Leads to Better Team Health
One of the most regulated industries in the world is healthcare. Working to modernize a slow moving industry is no easy task. Luckily, Logibec is working to make healthcare perform in the modern world. The company is a major player in the Canadian healthcare IT and has been leading the modernization effort for over 35 years.
Logibec focuses on every part of hospital management, from supplies and logistics, to pharmaceuticals, to patient management within a hospital system and their health history. The applications they create are focused on ensuring information is useful, portable, and secure. These are the main needs of healthcare providers around the world, and, while Logibec is currently focused in Canada, it also has subsidiaries working in the United States.
When it comes to keeping track of such a large scale and diverse set of data points within the infrastructure and tech stacks, Logibec was presented with an interesting task. Using everything from COBOL to dotNet to JavaScript to Delphi, they focus on building to the needs of the industry they serve.
Their first solution was to build something in house. A common response to the needs within an application development team is that everything can be solved here. Part of this solution was looking at logs that were hidden to all but the developers, the standard logs one sees when examining server data. This lead to less enlightenment than expected. There was no aggregation, no way to extend the information or share it. The shortcomings made the team realize something better needed to be brought in.
The team began to play with Humio earlier this year. It was immediately apparent it made sense to the folks looking into the logs and trying to analyze the data. The team began a proof of concept to examine the aggregation and correlation features to see if the output was what they strived for in the Logibec home grown solution.
It didn’t take long to realize Humio was the solution they were looking for. Building a Humio environment that allowed any Logibec applications to expose the logs and keep them auditable won over the team and widespread adoption was seen.
“Another feature that made us choose Humio was its abilities to generate custom alerts based on logs it gathered,” says Alexandre Larouche, Logibec’s Head of Product. The customization was a huge point in making the decision to adopt Humio, but there was also the ease of ramp up. As Larouche says, “Team onboarding was so easy!”
Flexibility with security, the ability to set limitations and give information was a key factor, especially working in such a regulated industry. Logibec found the monitoring solution they had been looking for. Humio was that answer.
