When it comes to gathering public data, keeping it safe, and using it to make better public infrastructure decisions, Denmark Addresses Web API (DAWA), is leading the way with the help of Humio.

The idea behind DAWA is that there are government agencies publishing public data on different kinds of infrastructure and geographical information. Much of this data can be used to derive helpful information for citizens in the form of APIs to examine the roads, locations, and addresses all around Denmark.

DAWA’s public Humio dashboard

Anders Hessellund Jensen and Finn Jordal, Lead Developer and Product Owner at DAWA respectively, know the value of a strong team with good feedback when it comes to dealing with public data. Their build stack is essentially a NodeJS application on top of a Postgres database to hold the data and was developed with AWS in mind as the Cloud solution. The AWS Cloud stack allows them the infrastructure flexibility to scale when needed, and flexibility is important to what they want to do.

Humio over Splunk for flexibility, safety, and speed
Part of that AWS stack was working with Splunk. Unfortunately, this was costly and too slow to meet their needs as an agile team constantly making their application better. “We needed eyes into what is going on in the application,” Anders mentions when referring to their search for a better monitoring solution.

The team had a look around and found Humio to meet the needs of a team looking to keep public data secure, but also fast enough to keep up with their application life cycle. The flexibility of Humio drove Splunk out and ushered in a new drive to gain insight from both infrastructure and application feedback. “Quick and easy to get started and amazingly easy to support,” says Anders about moving to Humio.

Finn adds, “Alerting is important for our instances.” Humio gave the team dashboards to track I/O, response time, and errors along with other infrastructure information. Deeper information allowed the team to make decisions on scaling and security. Quickly, the use of Humio spread through all of DAWA.

Stable monitoring
Staying up and running is important when it comes to application development. DAWA understands the importance of getting a good look under the bonnet to see what’s happening in their application and in their infrastructure and Humio will continue to help them.
