How could I have forgotten outspoken Nona?
Nona’s in a funk today.
She has to get up in front of her dad’s congregation and apologize for putting condoms in a Valentine’s Party piñata along with the candy.
Only thing is, she’s not sorry she did it. If given a chance, she’d do it again in a heartbeat. Especially if that heart was made of papier mache.
But when the condoms rained down, some of the little kids tore the packages open, thinking there was candy inside. When they put the well-lubed rubbers in their mouths and got a taste, they gagged and screamed.
Fortunately, no one choked on them, but as ‘Pastor-Dad’ reminded her more than once, someone could have. So she has to get up in church and apologize to those parents and their kids.
That’s why I’m in a funk today.
When I went to write her little speech, words weren’t coming like they usually do.
After all, Nona’s my favorite character in Man Pregnant! And not just mine. Friends in my writing group love her, too. She’s precocious, outspoken, and witty. She doesn’t try to be popular or fit in with the crowd. Being authentically who she is, is way more important. And if…
