5. ‘Beginners’ (2011)

Christopher Plummer won his first Oscar at the age of 82 as a 70-something father and widower who opens his heart to the truth —that he is, and has always been, a gay man. His journey is both melancholy and moving, as he struggles to connect with his middle-aged son played by Ewan McGregor. Like any star with a decades-long career, Plummer has had his lean and his fat years. I suppose it’s too bad it took so long for his peers at the Academy to recognize him but. I suppose, better late than never. Plummer is at his most vulnerable in this role about a man who learns you’re never too old to be yourself.

4. ‘Murder By Decree’ (1979)

Fans of Plummer’s performance in the hip whodunnit Knives Out should check him out as the most famous fictional detective of all, Sherlock Holmes. This smart thriller drops Homes into the middle of the infamous Jack the Ripper case, the serial killer who terrorized Victorian London in the 1880s. As Holmes, Plummer is regal and quick-witted but it is his friendship with his faithful partner against crime Dr. Watson played by the great James Mason that is the star of the movie.
