A Little Research Can Unravel Big Ideas

I was going to compare Joe Rogan to the Oracle of Delphi, the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in Ancient Greece. That was my big idea for the day. Then I did a little research.

The 8th century BC oracle was famous for making prophecies and here’s where I was wrong: I thought she spent her days inhaling noxious fumes from a chasm in the rocky floor of the temple. She’d get high as fuck and babble nonsensically and then the priests would record the gibberish and interpret it.

This is not true. I should have suspected it, too. It reads like some historian’s sexist joke — it takes a man to make sense of a woman.

Anyway, my big idea was to suggest Joe Rogan is an oracle on his hit Spotify podcast The Joe Rogan Experience — he smokes a little weed, then his eyes roll into the back of his head and he just blabbers. But this is not a historically accurate comparison.

Boy, am I glad I didn’t write that blog post. A classicist might have publicly dragged me and rightfully so.
