The celebrated actor Tom Hardy and I share a similar burden: We’re both devastatingly handsome. But unlike Hardy, I can hide my face behind social media avatars. His job is to smile for the camera and mine is to sit in a dark room and write sentences like the one you’re reading right now.

But Hardy hardly smiles for the camera, though. He has spent most of his movie career covering up his strong jaw and pouty lips. If there’s a role that requires an actor to wear a World War 2-era fighter plane oxygen mask for the whole movie, then Hardy is your man. He’s not just another pretty face.

Tom Hardy is a fascinating actor — he’s powerful and passionate and never, ever boring. But mostly I find him fascinating because he struggles with his good looks in his work.
