In a new op-ed, Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker celebrates Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the comedian-turned-politician who has surprised the world with his bravery and defiance in the face of a barbaric invasion by neighboring Russia.

And he should be cheered, I think. There is plenty of disinformation coming out of the conflict in Ukraine, but that’s nothing new. As the old saying goes, the first casualty when war comes is truth. But as the invasion enters its third week, it’s hard to think everything is going along to plan for President Vladimir Putin.

News of Russian generals killed in combat and a constant stream of battlefield videos showing helicopters and tanks being destroyed by well-armed Ukrainian defenders suggests this is a slow-motion war that will get worse before it gets better. It is hard to deny, however, that Zelensky’s scrappy, pugnacious performance also supports the narrative that Russia is getting bogged down in a hopeless quagmire.
