An Interview with Make It Great Institute Founder Phil Gerbyshak

In this GREAT interview with Phil Gerbyshak, he shares with us amazing ideas on how to make everyday things great, what’s it like to be a relationship geek and a new media coach — and more importantly how to change a world that’s searching for more authentic relationships.

Where did you get the inspiration to start the Make It Great Institute?

A lot of people have asked me for help in my life. I found the institute to provide a place where folks could find the help they needed to take their life to the next level.

What’s the best way to Make Each Day a Great Day?

I firmly believe we are destined to become a combination of the people we meet and the things we learn. The best way to make it great is to find great people to learn great things from.

How can we use social media tools to change the world?

Social media allows us access to people we’d never have access to years ago. We’re able to have conversations, exchange ideas, disagree, and get deeper inside folks’ heads than not having social media. All of which means more connections to great people who can help you make it great.

What does it mean to be a Relationship Geek?

A relationship geek is someone who is passionate about creating positive relationships in their life. Relationships and people are the currency of life, and geeks are experts, so if you combine the two, you get experts on people and relationships.

How do I go about defining my dreams?

Pay attention to what consistently pops up in your day dreams. Write them down. Take note of what excites you. Write that down. Look for similarities. Try new things often. Tell your story and try to understand what it means. Listen to others’ stories and understand what they are all about. And ask for help when you get stuck.

What’s the best thing about being a New Media Coach?

Showing people how much fun it can be to have authentic conversations with their customers and potential customers, and then showing how easy the tools are to use when you have goals and purpose around why you’re doing what you do.

How can we improve the HungryPeople blog?

Focus more, tag less. 459 tags seems like a lot. Try to narrow your scope down so you can help people better understand your story. Less is more when it comes to understanding.

How different are YOU from Anthony Robbins?

I’m only 5 foot 10, and I can’t grow facial hair. The differences start there, and continue on far beyond where the mind can see, and yet, I’m sure there’s a LOT we have in common. It’s hard to share more than that as I’ve never met Mr. Robbins. When I do meet him, I’ll come back to you. (Editor’s note: Calling Tony Robbins).

Who are YOUR personal heroes?

Jesus Christ died because of what he believed to be true. That’s inspiring and heroic to me. Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Theresa died serving others. That’s heroic to me too. Those who have strong beliefs and who are willing to die in the service of others are my heroes.

What are YOU hungry for?

I’m hungry to be the change in the world to make this a greater place.

What’s YOUR favorite brand?

I’m not really a brand guy, I’m a people guy. My favorite people brand would have to be Marcus Buckingham, because he writes and speaks about helping people discover their strengths, something I am very passionate about.
