Is Gilmore Girls sex-positive? Why Lorelai is problematic

Gilmore Girls gives us both the best and the worst when it comes to feminism.

The show, which first aired in 2000 and centers around the relationship between Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory, is often praised for its strong female characters and its portrayal of a single mother-daughter relationship.

However, Gilmore Girls has also been the source of much controversy. The show has been criticized for its portrayal of women, its representation of class, the lack of diversity in the show’s characters, and its treatment of certain social issues.

I’d like to focus on one specific issue I have with Gilmore Girls: the way it deals with sex.

Rory and Lorelai

Every Autumn, I like to watch at least a couple of episodes of Gilmore Girls. I started watching the show when I was only 10 years old and re-watching the episodes gives me a cozy feeling, like returning to your hometown for Christmas.

When I was young, I looked up to Rory Gilmore, the daughter in the central mother-daughter relationship. She taught me a lot of things. That it was okay to be reading books all the time, for example. She taught me that it was okay to like school…
