Last week, Hustle welcomed four UC Berkeley students into their San Francisco office to find out what it’s like to create and maintain a one-to-one texting platform that is pioneering a future in political technology. We were able to shadow different teams at Hustle, sit in on client on-boardings, team strategy meetings, and have Q&A sessions with team leaders across the company. During our time at Hustle, we had a firsthand look at how Hustle communicates with their clients, investors, and their remote teams in Washington DC and New York City.

What I learned in only four days at Hustle:

1. Work culture: a living, breathing thing

The work culture at Hustle is warm, inviting, productive, and most importantly, creates positive results. At Hustle, every employee is aware of their role and how it directly makes an impact on the company. The Hustle staff works hard to prioritize work-life balance by not expecting employees to work long hours and making the office pet-friendly. Hard work does not go unnoticed and healthy discussion is encouraged through frequent meetings in their cool galaxy-themed meeting rooms.

2. Passion = Productivity

When activists and engineers come together, a revolutionary technology platform that has the power to activate thousands is the result. The employees I met are all extremely different and ended up at Hustle through completely different paths; what they have in common, however, is that they’re passionate about creating political change through their work. Each and every employee feels personal responsibility toward the organizations that use Hustle and helping clients achieve their goals. Hustle chooses to work with organizations that share strong values to ensure their platform is moving the country in the right direction.

3. Communication is Key

There’s no doubt that employees at Hustle are experienced and qualified; what makes the company successful, though, is how they are able to communicate with each other to improve overall performance. Whether it’s weekly product engineering meetings, or quarterly checkups on clients, everyone at Hustle understands that discussion is effective. It’s not surprising that a messaging platform company is good at facilitating conversation: no one understands the power of communication quite like them!

On behalf of the externs and I, I’d like to thank Hustle and the externship program at UC Berkeley for giving us the opportunity to get out of the library and experience work life for a couple days. The Cal alumni at Hustle welcomed us like friends and made us excited for life beyond the university.
