Texting is an undeniable way of life. It is increasingly becoming a convenient and easy communication tool to keep people in the know. In a time defined by separation, convenient innovative yet personable communication is key to business engagement, success, and survival.

The benefit of peer-to-peer (P2P) text messaging is getting your voice, tone, message, and action into the hands of the people who support your brand and believe in your cause. Hustle wants to make sure organizations connect when and where it really counts. The magic is, it is real people talking to real people. Here are a few tips to make the most of every Hustle:

Determine your objectives. Remember this is the first and foremost important step in setting up your Goals. It’s your Northstar that will keep you and those deploying each message on track. It will guide your scripts and messages to either engage and/or take action. Some Goals’ sole objective is to share pertinent information quickly and send people to a landing page, website, or other forms of content once they engage with you. Other campaign objectives require a deeper, more conversational approach, especially when recruiting for participation in some form or fashion. Determine your objectives!

Know your audience. For your message to be most effective, know who your target audience is and how they are aligned with the aim of your outreach. The starting point is understanding what you’re offering/asking, how it relates to your audience, and how it meets your defined objective. Address your audience as personally as possible. So before you do so, ask yourself:

  • Has your audience engaged with you before?
  • How will they benefit from your ask?
  • What do your objective and target audience have in common?

Bring your voice to text life. You are not a bot. Don’t act like one! Use your authentic voice, be personal, and have fun. You have defined your objective. You know your audience. You should be able to craft your message in less than 200 characters (160 would be even better!). Keep it short and sweet. Use upbeat language. A casual tone is good. Use emojis. Abbreviate. And above all, ask a question to encourage a response from your audience! Remember, you want to engage so you have plenty of chances to include more details in a follow-up text conversation. The initial script is meant to start the two-way dialogue. The general rule of thumb:

  • Keep it personal and design it to read as a friendly text
  • In the initial script ask a question to encourage a response, eg. “Can you make it?”
  • Use reminders and follow up scripts to keep the conversation going and add more details.

Analyze. Analyzing what’s working with a campaign can help you eliminate a degree of guesswork in future text campaigns. Use the conversational thread to your advantage for things like forecasting, developing personas, understanding what resonates and what your audience cares about.

A P2P text messaging platform enables more authentic, relational, and actionable conversations. You want to make the most of these interactions.
