Goals: they’re critical to a successful campaign. Last week, we updated our Legislative Contact goal type, which now, among other things, allows admins to target different phone numbers within one goal. It’s an exciting update makes this feature even more useful to our clients. The vast majority of Legislative Call users have used it to organize constituents all across the country to call their representatives.

But don’t let the name fool you. That’s not all you can do with Legislative Contact Goals. I’d like to focus on another type of campaign that this feature can help you win.

Take, for example, the successful Justice for Janitors campaign in Los Angeles. This was a hard fought direct action campaign, where janitorial workers tried to organize and bargain for fair pay. Their direct employers were contracting work from large office buildings, and had no real power to raise wages. The campaign reached a turning point when the workers were able to put pressure on the building owners and tenants of the buildings, to allow them to organize.

Today, when we live in a post-Citizens United world, where money and corporations are influencing politics more than ever, targeting corporations directly is a powerful tactic.

Recently, politicians in North Carolina were forced to back away from a bill discriminating against transgender people. The controversial bathroom bill was finally rescinded not because legislators magically changed their minds: they retreated from the issue after multiple Fortune 500 corporations and powerful organizations either left, or threatened to leave the state. Imagine how efficiently you could organize supporters to target companies like the NBA if politicians ever tried to resume open discrimination. Hustle’s Legislative Call goal helps you reach your supporters with a personal ask to make that call and provide coaching to prepare and launch them confidently into action.

In addition to the huge organizing efforts that activists and leaders mount for these types of campaigns, having a tool that makes it more efficient to pressure, and influence those in power–whether legislators or corporations– pushes progress forward. And that’s what motivates all of us here at Hustle.
