The 1985 National Powerboat Association race in Augusta Georgia was tag named the Masters. Spinning around the one-mile course on the Savannah River were 2-Liter Champ Boats supported by a class of SST 140s and Mod VPs.

The money was right, $40,000 total purse with $22,500 earmarked for the F1 Champ Race Boats alone. The SST 140s raced a traditional three-heat format while the Champ Boats and Mod VPs opted for a couple of qualifiers and a single main event to decide all the money.
