Hired Right by Us
As we grow, we have to start thinking about different things. Once upon a time, we were able to hire on instinct. Bring someone in, talk about their work, maybe take them out for a beer. Look them in the whites of their eyes and decide if they’re going to fit. We won’t lie and tell you it didn’t work. Some of our best people were hired that way.
But today, everything is different. In the span of 2 short years, we grew out of 2 different office spaces, and more than doubled the size of our staff. Having hired and lost, and hired again, we were forced to think super deep about the way we bring on new talent. We had to define a new set of values that reflected how we hired.
Basically, it comes down to this: we treat people the way we’d like to be treated if we applied to work at Green Brick Labs. If it’s not good enough for us, it’s not good enough for our hires.
It starts with the obvious.
1. You deserve research guidance. It’s partly out job to give you the tools you need to discover more about our company. As part our thank you email when you apply, we make sure to include research links for you use.
2. You deserve to know when we’re busy. If we have a backlog of applications, you deserve a follow-up email explaining that we are on it. With us, you get that.
3. You deserve to know what the job is about before applying. Vague job descriptions are bad for everyone. At best, they create unsuitable applications. At worst, they make us look like we don’t know what we’re hiring for. We try to make sure you don’t have any basic questions about the role before applying.
4. You deserve to know when we’ve decided to pass on your application. You will never have to follow-up on the status of your application because as soon as we know you’re not a fit, you do too.
5. You deserve to interview in a relaxed environment. ‘Boiler-room’ interviews are stupid. What’s the point of purposely subjecting your applicant to a high-stress environment? It’s difficult enough to tell your life story to bunch of strangers.
6. You deserve to meet your team. You’ll be working with them for a huge part of the day, so you should get to decide whether you click or not.
After that, the ‘easy’ part begins.
It is seriously fun to work here, though. And our spirit of fun starts with the respect we have for each and every person that walks through our doors.
