Dear Community,

We’d like to officially introduce you to our latest open-source project, the real-time global Covid-19 map. It is designed to help mitigate the further impact of the epidemic worldwide through open-source data collection. The key feature of an open-source virus map as compared to the official map is that, the crowd-build data contributed by global users will be displayed on the map as POIs, in addition to official data. You might ask why it is necessary?

I’ll quote the view from Dr. Ryan from WHO, who said that the fate of the virus is more in the hands of society than the virus itself. It’s down to how societies and individuals take responsibility to protect themselves and others. We know that time and information are vital in epidemic avoidance, and some key statistics have proven to be effective in epidemic monitoring such as the no. of confirmed, suspected, infected, recovered, deceased cases, as well as help information. While your country or provincial institutions might not be reporting sufficiently detailed information you need to know, or they have not yet revealed as enough information about your local area as you know, it’s time for you to contribute your open-source data. Open-source epidemic map allows everyone to add and see what is the real situation around you, and when did it happen, especially in the severe areas or regions.

To put it short, the open-source map will work as an information collection platform to display the contribution from you as POIs, and from the official channels such as National CDCs in color patterns. Please remember, your contribution is more important to us.

In the meantime, to ensure that the uploaded POIs and the details are correct, we open the POI correction function to all and encourage global community to report any misleading information nearby. There’s a saying that a true man won’t stand beside a collapsing wall. The crowd-build data will work as your individual guide to avoid the potential risks in your local area.

As global number of coronavirus infections has surpassed 100,000, the World Health Organization (WHO) today said the threat of a pandemic from the COVID-19 virus is very real, signaling a tone of increased urgency. Although it is still not a “pandemic” yet, but we should be aware of its growing trend and potential impact on our economy and society. In future, Hyperion will open API for developers to create personalized maps.
