Hyperlane is expanding to Starknet and the CairoVM, thanks to the open-source contributions of Pragma and Nethermind. This Hyperlane Starknet implementation is set to introduce multiple powerful features for Starknet users and developers:

  • Fast, permissionless token bridging to and from Starknet and other CairoVM rollups.
  • Interchain applications that operate seamlessly across multiple blockchains/rollups.
  • Connection to 60+ Hyperlane-connected chains for Starknet apps and users, and vice versa.

The implementation is completed and audited. Mainnet details coming soon.

What is Starknet and CairoVM?

Starknet is a zero-knowledge rollup that enables any dApp to achieve massive computation scale without compromising on Ethereum’s composability and security. It achieves this by bundling many transactions into off-chain computed proofs that are settled on Ethereum as a single transaction. It’s a top 25 chain in Total Value Locked and one of the first ZK rollups in production ever.

Starknet contracts and the Starknet Virtual Machine (VM) are written in Cairo, a custom-built and specialized programming language.

What’s New?

The team behind Pragma, the leading oracle on Starknet, completed the Hyperlane Starknet implementation and passed the audit (see audit here). Hyperlane is currently live on testnet between Starknet and Madara, another CairoVM rollup.

Starknet compatible Warp Routes, Hyperlane’s token bridging application, are in final stages of development by Nethermind, the blockchain research and engineering team behind innovations such as the Nethermind Ethereum client.

Hyperlane: AnyVM Adaptability

Hyperlane is powerful in that it allows and encourages external developers to use, develop, and operate the network. As an interoperability network, scaling to new chains and VMs is an impossible task for any core development team, so making it easy and mutually beneficial for external teams to contribute is key.

Hyperlane enables ecosystem experts to focus on their domains. As experts on CairoVM, Pragma was best equipped to develop Hyperlane Starknet. Pragma helped adapt Hyperlane for the CairoVM for their own interoperability needs, to extend their oracle to more chains. Hyperlane CairoVM joins the SVM and CosmWasm as examples of community-built Hyperlane implementations.

With so many new altVMs and altVM chains coming to market over the next months and years, the only way to connect all of them is with Hyperlane’s permissionless and open-source approach.

What’s Next

Hyperlane Starknet is coming to mainnet soon, so stay tuned for more details! Next up: enabling permissionless expansion to any CairoVM chain.

More about Hyperlane

Hyperlane is the open interoperability framework. It empowers developers to connect anywhere onchain and build applications that can easily and securely communicate between multiple blockchains. Importantly, Hyperlane is fully open-source and always permissionless to build with.
