Entanglement Theory
INT.SPACEPLANE.SPACE
QUASAR plants his face on the window into
SPACE.
Out there, MARS.
Now, ever smaller, STARS appear to take its place. He bends his neck further to get a better view.
PASSENGER
You should probably strap up unless you want to flow all the way to first class.
Quasar floats WEIGHTLESS.
Then quickly grabs his seatbelt, not before
BUMP
He bangs his head on the ceiling,
CLICK
Finally locked in.
The seatbelt gradually pulls him back down.
QUASAR
Sorry.
PASSENGER
No worries. First time flyer?
QUASAR
Well, I've been to the Moon two times. But Earths is where I'm from, born and raised.
PASSENGER
Ack, Moon, too much light pollution. Earth's worse.
QUASAR
Right? The stars look so beautiful from out here.
PASSENGER
Like little drops of cream in black coffee.
(beat)
QUASAR
A unique...analogy.
HEADPHONES in, Quasar plants his face back on the window. Mars, unseen.
INT.QUASAR’S ROOM.AFTERNOON
Title Card: A FEW MONTHS LATER
Quasar sits at his DESK. LAPTOP illuminates his face
MICHIO KAKU
Quasar unlocks his Extended Brain (XB), a mobile device the size of a pocket journal.
ON THE SCREEN
(typing)
g-o-o-
A message pops up.
MELANIE
Morning!
QUASAR
Funny I was just about to text you!
MELANIE
Wowww, how was your day?
QUASAR
Pretty chill, nothing crazy happened.
Quasar reaches for an aluminum foil-wrapped burrito. He opens, bites.
MELANIE
You were in my dream last night.
QUASAR
What happened?
MELANIE
We were eating burritos.
Quasar DROPS his burrito.
QUASAR
Hah! What's new.
MELANIE
I see you in my dreams more than I see you in real life.
(beat)
QUASAR
Sometimes I wonder if you're even real. How did we end up like this? Why didn't we plan it better?
MELANIE
Well, you were pretty set on going back to Earth. I would've stayed on the Moon for another year, or maybe do a holiday on Europa–
QUASAR
And now you're over 200 million kilometers away.
Quasar clicks on Melanie’s moving face and it rises out of the XB as a holograph.
QUASAR
How long can we keep this up?
MELANIE
What do you mean? As long as it takes.
QUASAR
Don't you ever wish I was really there?
(beat)
Melanie ignores.
MELANIE
Look.
She pivots the camera towards a window. It's pitch black with a few stars.
Gotta head out to work soon.
QUASAR
Cool. Guess I'll see you never.
MELANIE
Don't say that!
She gestures back to the window.
Don't the stars look so beautiful from out here? Like little drops of cream in black coffee.
QUASAR
Yeah, right? Wait, I didn't, how did you–
MELANIE
What?
QUASAR
So the Theory is real.
