What’s Hypnos?

Sleep trackers are becoming integral to many peoples lives, including the developers at Hypos! We love that trackers gather data about our REM, Deep sleep, Light sleep, bed disturbances, our heart-rate, etc. But at the end of the day, these trackers do just that — gather data. They tell us that our sleep is bad and that we should improve it. But how are we supposed to improve?

We at Hypnos realized there was an information gap between users and their sleep trackers, so we made it our mission to make the perfect sleep journal to fill that gap. It’s been almost a year since we started building Hypnos. We’re excited and overjoyed that we can finally share it with everyone.

Introducing Hypnos, a digital sleep journal that helps you understand which of your daily habits and activities impact your mood and sleep.

Hypnos is an intuitive digital sleep journal that provides all the necessary information to better understand your sleep. It provides a fun daily check-in experience with visualization for your sleep, activities, mood, and a journaling system to write down your abstract dreams or general life events.

With our light-hearted and friendly driven design, we focused on making a fun companion for your sleep journey. Logging your activities shouldn’t be a chore, we tackled that by creating a simple and fun check-in experience that allows you to quickly log your activities or find new sleep habits to experiment with. For people that enjoy visuals, we animated all of our check-in moods with expressive, custom emojis to provide direct feedback. This visual feedback continues with the activities selection portion too, with playful with shapes representing your activities flying into the mouth and being eaten by of one of our emojis.

Sleep is complex, we’ve simplified it with our dashboard screen which provides you a birds-eye view of what’s going on with your sleep. This includes a quick view of your moods throughout the week and a visual bedtime tracker to measure how closely you’ve been hitting your bedtime and wakeup goals. Your recent sleep trends are also readily available along with graphs which represents how your activities correlate with your mood and sleep.

For a lot of people dreams are fleeting, so we provide a journaling system at the top of the dashboard. As soon you’re done checking in you can write down your dreams or even general life events for future reference. We believe that a sleep journal allows users to discover subconscious habits that may be impacting their sleep. Providing a space to discover those details about yourself is a step towards improving your sleep.

Then there are the insights. The information that fills the gap between sleep trackers and you. The most important insights about your sleep are personal. With the inclusion of your mood and activity metrics, your personal context shapes the insights to inform you on what you’re doing right or wrong, and what you can do to change it. We provide a variety of insights, some as simple as suggesting a new bed time, to more complex suggestions like what sleep habit you can integrate into your life to improve your sleep. Some of our other insights include, but are not limited to:

  • Better strategies for your bedtime routines
  • Informing you of positive habit and sleeping streaks
  • New correlations between habits, mood and sleep
  • Informing you of increased productivity (through your activities)

Insights are of the most important features to Hypnos, and the one we’re working on the most. But the features won’t stop at insights, we have a feature rich roadmap ahead of us. We’re non-stop working on delivering a sleep journal that becomes your basis for a good nights sleep.

Who made Hypnos?

Hypnos is comprised of a small team of researchers that have constantly fought to improve their own sleep while chasing innovation. Our first venture together was in University when we worked on indoor solar devices to recycle wasted energy. That semester was filled with late nights that often turned into early mornings. Soon enough, functioning on less sleep and more coffee became the norm.

It wasn’t until a year after we had graduated and had been accepted into the world renowned YCombinator for another business venture in chemical extraction that our sleep really demanded our attention. We were burning out, leading to mistakes we otherwise wouldn’t be making. The heart of our problem was sleep.

We set out to learn everything we could. We poured through papers on sleep, attended coaching courses, learned how to read EEG’s and interpret the data. We even became sleep coaches for other entrepreneurs. Before we new it, we were knee deep in the issues of sleep.

There’s a lot of information you need about a person, to make accurate or relevant suggestions. We knew that if we wanted to create a a widely accessible solution to restless sleep, we needed a method that we could tailor to an individual that would constantly adapt to their ever-changing lives. Not only that, but the design of such a software, really matters. Especially when our society is so accustom to the most convenient solutions.

We’ve taken our experience and passion in the sleep industry to create Hypnos — a sleep journal that takes your sleep data and understands your context, to help you get better sleep.

Hypnos wouldn’t have been possible without the support from our sleep coaching clients and our beta testers. We greatly appreciate all the help we’ve received throughout our journey thus far.
