Elementary, Season 4: A Review
Hi everyone. It looks like after I published my post on Ep. 9, Netflix asked the timed text vendor responsible for Elementary Season 4, to redeliver the whole season. I’m not implying causation; the work would have been too much to deliver in just over a week anyway. But the work is still uneven. And the episode I did? Still not fixed in key places. So I wanted to do a special version of an I Can’t Even post that looks at this whole season. One error per episode, to show that you didn’t do your work. Again.

So, you’re telling me that you don’t know what “want for” means… a professional… okay…
“Want for” 은 따로 떼어서 해석하는 것이 아니라 한 구문으로 해석해야 한다. 뜻은 “부족, lack” 이고 shall not 으로 시작했으니 “부족하지 않겠어요” 라고 읽는 게 맞다. 모르면 검색을 해보시는 게 맞는 거 아닌가. 특히나 맥락을 보면 절대로 이 문장이 나올 수가 없는데.
Ep. 2: Evidence of Things Not Seen, 00:52

You really need to listen to the audio to get the gist, but the breakdown goes like this:
per the subtitle: [weakness], [real], [imagined]
per the audio: [real weakness], [imagined weakness]
Also I guess if you knew how a comma or “or” worked then you could just read the text and find out… or context… because why the hell would you refer to imaginary worlds?
오디오를 실제로 들어보거나, 쉼표와 or 의 사용방법을 알았다면, 아니면 최소한 문맥이라도 알았다면 이렇게 오역을 하진 않았을텐데. 아니 대체 어디서 가상 세계가 나올 문맥이 있냐고요.

If you knew the context, you would never say wheeled carts. Samples would normally be moved on wheeled carts. But the perpetrator used a gurney because he was transporting a body, and Sherlock noticed those tracks. Also, if you don’t know what a gurney is, GOOGLE IT BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR WORK.
원래 샘플이야 바퀴 달린 카트에 싣고 다닐 수도 있겠지만 여기선 시체/사람을 싣고 다녀야 했기 때문에 셜록이 침대 자국을 보고 여기서 이동식 침대를 쓰냐고 물었는데 대체 어디서 카트가 나오지… gurney 라는 단어 모르면 제발 검색 하고 사세요.

If you don’t engage in contemporary English conversation, you won’t ever understand the meaning of “double down”. It ain’t the burger, and it sure ain’t the blackjack move that dictionaries tell you. It theoretically could mean actually twice increasing your efforts, but the “double” part has transcended its literal roots and become figurative. It now means to greatly increase your effort at something. (Read: a piece about how tech companies use the phrase “double down”. By Dan Seifert at the Verge, it’s an article I so enjoyed that I still remember it after four years)

The original mistake. I can’t tell which is worse.

The context implies that they didn’t take any precautions because Morland didn’t tell them. The phrasing is slightly different because the current subtitle implies that they did take those precautions already.
원문은 예방책을 (말을 안 해줘서) 예방책을 안 세웠다는 건데, 자막은 좀 긍정의 방향으로 가고 있어서 이상했음.

In law enforcement and the military, where getting a code wrong could be the difference between life and death, a different system of reading is used — the phonetic alphabet. In such usage, numbers 10–99 are spelled out so that 84 is actually read “eight-four”. Same applies here, 7–4 doesn’t mean the fourth squad of the 7th precinct, it just means the 74th precinct. HAVE YOU NEVER WATCHED “BROOKLYN NINE-NINE”. IT’S EVEN ON NETFLIX.
코드를 틀리는 순간 생사가 걸릴수도 있는 경찰에서는, 무전 통신의 상태나 개인의 발음과 상관없이 확실히 코드를 전달할 수 있는 음성 문자를 쓴다. 이 시스템에서 10~99의 숫자는 10자리 수와 1자리 수를 떼어서 n-n 으로 읽는다. 그러므로 7–4는 무슨 반을 가르키는 게 아니라 그냥 74를 말하는 거고, the 74(th) 서수가 생략된 74구역임을 알 수 있다. 근데 사실 음성 문자고 뭐고 몰라도 브루클린 나인-나인 (99구역) 쇼 이름만 알아도 알 수 있는 거잖아… 그거 넷플릭스에 있는데…

The Korean word used for “geek” here carries too many negative connotations to be a good substitute.
표준국어대사전에 의하면, “별종”은 “별스러운 사람을 속되게 이르는 말” 이라고 한다. 솔직히 “별종”은 너무 부정적인 단어 아닌지? 긱이라고 하진 못해도 덕후라고 쓰면 딱 맞을 듯 하다.
Ep. 18: Ready or Not, 01:50

This is a contextual error. To understand, we need to go back to Ep. 13. Sherlock and Watson are besieged by noise from next door, which had been turned into an AwayKay (party vacation rental). Turns out, the owner Trent Garby had been so pissed off by Sherlock that he moved out and listed it as a party rental. To “take care” of the AwayKay problem, Sherlock attempted a chainsaw art in the study. Trent has moved back in by this episode, but he’s making a lot of sex noise and this is pissing Sherlock off; enough for him to scheme Trent’s demise. This is what Watson is referring to now — she’s forbidding Sherlock from doing stupid stuff to drive out Trent again.
에피소드 몇개를 거슬러 가야 하는데, 에피 13에서 만난 옆집 주인 트렌트에 관한 이야기다. 셜록 이웃인게 너무 힘들어서 집을 에어비앤비 짝퉁에 올리고 일부러 소리 많이 내는 손님만 받은 것이다. 셜록은 이 옆집 손님들을 쫓아 내려고 “전기톱 예술”을 준비했었다. 지금 에피에서는 다시 집에 들어온 트렌트가 너무 섹스 소리를 많이 내자 셜록이 짜증을 내며 다시 내쫓을려고 머리를 굴리는데, 왓슨이 (저번에 했던) 전기톱 예술이나 밴드 부르는 거 하지 마라고 경고하는 씬이다. 그러니까 전기톱 예술이나 밴드를 부르는 주체는 트렌트가 아니라 셜록이므로 고쳐 써야 한다.

“Moving [place A]” and “moving to [place A]” is of course the same thing, unless you live in a sensible world like ours at which point it becomes TOTALLY NOT THE SAME THING.
Move Diogenes: 디오게네스를 옮기다. 이전하다.
Move to Diogenes: 디오게네스로 이사하다.
사실 “~로 간다” 와 “move to ~” 가 같다고 말할수도 없지만, 그렇게 착각한 것으로 보인다. 세상에…

We’re talking about the hardships that her mother faced while being a single parent. We’re not talking about her being raised alone, when she has just mentioned HER SIBLINGS in the previous sentence. But hey, who cares?
어머님이 홀로 이 사람을 키워 낸 게 힘들다고 하는 건데, 한국어 번역에서는 어머님은 날아가고 왜 갑자기 외동딸로 둔갑했는가. 왜.
Ep. 21: Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing, 04:12
Original text: This animal is particular.
Current subtitle: 이 동물은 특별해요
What current subtitle means: This animal is special.
What subtitles should read: 얘는 낯을 좀 가려요
This is also quite dependent on context. They’re talking about how Sherlock got the cat for his girlfriend but the cat didn’t take to Fiona. Then Sherlock says: “this animal is particular.” Which is followed up by “seems to like you (Watson) though.” So we can infer that it’s not about the cat being special, but the cat’s preferences for certain people. The definition for that is far down the list, but it’s there.
“Particular” 이 물론 특별하다는 뜻도 있지만 이 문맥에서 볼때, 피오나는 싫어하고 왓슨은 좋아하는 것 같다는 앞뒤 문장이 있다. 그러면 고양이가 특별하다는 것 보단 고양이가 [사람에 대해] 까다롭다라는 뜻으로 해석 할 수 있다. 사람에 대해 까다로운 건 낯을 가린다 라고 표현 가능하다. 잘 안쓰는 뜻이고 돌아가야 하지만 맞는 표현으로 고치는 게 낫지 않을까?

The example is about how viewing the crime scene as a giraffe or a mouse changes the experience of the scene. Not how the “environment” affects our behavior. Please remember you aren’t in Creative Writing class.
도저히 지금 자막 어떻게 창조하셨는지 모르겠는데, 여기 창의적 글쓰기 수업 아니구요. 행동에 관한 이야기는 진짜 없는데 어디서 갖고왔는지도 모르겠음.
Ep. 23: The Invisible Hand, 02:15

There’s compromise and then there’s compromised. If you can’t tell that apart, maybe you shouldn’t be doing this.
물론 compromise 가 타협은 맞는데 이 맥락에서 이 타협이 그 좋은 타협이 아니구요. 돈을 먹거나 약점이 잡혀서 어쩔 수 없이 “타협” 또는 타락한 인물들이라는 뜻이다.
Ep.24: A Difference in Kind, 00:31
Original text: Nor does anyone I oversee. (have any bad feelings toward you)

What current subtitle means: Nor do I have any bad feelings toward anyone I surveil
What subtitles should read: 내 밑에서 일하는 사람들 누구도 당신한테 악감정 없어요
Oversight and surveillance are two different things…
Oversee: 상관/보스가 ~를 감독하다
감시: surveillance…
완전 다른 이야기가 되어버렸다. “내가 감시하는 누구에게도 그런 감정 없어요” 라고 하면 자기가 감시하는 대상들에게 아무 악감정도 없다는 건데, 그럼 왜 감시를 하는건가. 원 대사의 뜻은 [자기도 셜록에게 아무 악감정이 없고] 자기 감독하에 있는 (부하들) 누구도 셜록에게 그런 감정이 없다는 것이다.
For this post, I chose the earliest mistake in every episode. When I found a mistranslation, I would move on to the next episode, and so forth. This is the whole season put together. I do not know of a more visual way to show how badly this season was done. The average timecode of the first mistake is 04:26. Considering that the average length of a whole episode is 40–45 minutes, on average you get your first mistake only 10% into an episode. I need only refer to my previous post about Ep. 9 to show you what follows after that initial mistake. How is this supposed to be a re-delivery?
이번 포스팅을 하면서 매 에피소드에서 제일 처음 보이는 오역만 골라봤다. 에러를 찾으면 거기서 멈추고 다음 에피소드로 넘어가는 형식으로 반복해서, 에피소드 진행상황을 다 붙여 보았다. 얼마나 이 시즌을 대충 한 건지 시각적으로 적나라하게 나타난다. 평균적으로, 첫 오역은 4분 26초에 일어나는데 에피소드가 40~45분인걸 감안할때 에피소드 10% 정도 보면 첫 오역이 일어난다는 것이다. 그 뒤에 어떤 상황이 뒤따르는지는 저번 포스팅만 봐도 알 수 있다. 이걸 대체 재납품 한다고 한건가…

Original Title: Murder Ex Machina
In Korean: 엑스 마키나를 죽여라 (Kill “Ex Machina”)
Sorry to break it to you, but “murder” in that context isn’t a verb, it’s a noun. It’s a play on the phrase “Deus Ex Machina”, which means “God from the machine”. Translated, “Murder Ex Machina” would be “murder from/by the machine,” which is apt because the episode features murder by car hacking.
“Murder Ex Machina” 에서 “murder” 은 동사 (죽이다) 가 아니고 명사 (살인) 이 맞다. “Deus Ex Machina” 는 “신이 기계에서 나온다 (God from the machine)” 이라는 오래된 관용어구인데, 원래 고대 연극에서 신이 모든 걸 해결해주는 부분에서 신을 연기하는 배우들을 기계로 등장시킨 걸 말한다. “Murder Ex Machina” 를 그렇게 번역해보면 “죽음/살인이 기계에서 나온다 = 기계 살인” 정도가 될 듯 하다. 일단 저렇게 동사로 쓰일 건 절대 아니고…
