Hi, Rachel. It’s the first time I’ve been able to put a name to the work. I’ve always referred to the translator and felt a bit guilty when I just assumed the male pronoun. Now I don’t need to feel guilty at all! I can finally be certain about my pronoun choices! Lovely! But your work leaves a lot to be desired. Let me show you how you should do your job.

“Radio car” 은 경찰차, 순찰차를 부르는 다른 말이다. “Radio” 랑 “car” 을 따로 해석하는 게 아니고요.

고압 나트륨 전구는 가로등에 쓰이는 그 노란색 전구다. 근데 그게 아무리 돌고 돌아도 기체가 다른 네온사인이 되진 않을텐데 왜… 대체…. 음. 네온사인이 나트륨하고 비슷하게 들리긴 하네요. 네. 그런 걸로 하죠.

“Secure” doesn’t imply possession. “Secure” used as a verb in this context means “able to track down and assure delivery of (collectibles)”. Especially when modified with “can” which implies ability.

“Secure” 이라고 할 때, 사실 그 컬렉션을 갖고 있다는 소리가 아니다. 수집품의 문맥에서 “secure” 을 동사로 썼을 때는, 그 수집품의 소재를 파악하고 어떤 방법을 통해서든 새 주인에게 그걸 배달 해 줄 수 있다는 뜻으로 쓰는 것이다. 문맥 뭉개지 맙시다.

문맥을 살펴보면 앞 문장에서 “현존하는 3명의 홈스 남자 중” 이라고 한다. 이 3명은 몰랜드 홈즈(부), 마이크로프트 홈즈(형), 그리고 셜록 홈즈(본인)를 뜻하는데, 조안은 2시즌에서 마이크로프트와 사귄 적이 있다. 그런데 이 2시즌에 대한 문맥이 없어도 사실 앞 문장만 파악되면 이 문장 해석하기 어렵지 않을텐데, 앞 문장 번역은 맞는 번역이다. 대체 이 문장을 어떻게 이렇게 틀리셨지.

So… I’m guessing you’re doing this by each sentence because that is the only way you could have got this wrong. I mean, by itself, “to provide ~” could go both ways. But seeing as the context is Zolotov contracting out the tech side to TetraBit, they are the ones providing.

문장 따로 떼서 해석하면 지금 자막대로 해석 할 수도 있겠지만, 문맥은 졸로토브가 항구 재개발건에서 테트라 비트에게 접근해 (approached) 기술적 면을 제공하라고 (to provide ~) 제안했다 라고 하는게 답이다. 기술을 갖고 있는 쪽에 테트라 비트인데 누가 기술을 제공한다고요?

원래 로봇 공학이라는 게 아직 연구와 투자가 많이 필요한 분야라서 수익을 내기 어려운데, 이 계약만 성사되었다면 로봇 부서가 수익을 내게 된다는 뜻이다. 로봇 부서가 이 회사를 멱살캐리한다는 게 아니라요.

I don’t know any Korean lawyers, so I haven’t been able to ask them this; but I know American lawyers so I asked them. To plead no contest is an alternative to pleading guilty or not guilty; you do not admit nor refute the charges. While not a guilty plea, its effects are the same as a guilty plea and carries aggravating circumstances in future criminal allegations. As seen here.

미국 법률체계에서는 no contest 라는 것이 있는데 피고인이 유죄, 무죄를 주장하지 않고 형사 사건에 대해 아무것도 인정 또는 반박하지 않는 것이다. 실제로는 피고인이 아무것도 하지 않았지만 실제 효과는 유죄와 같이 여겨져 나중에 다시 잡혀들어오게 되면 이렇게 니가 no contest 한 사건도 있잖아!! 라고 압박할 수 있는 것이다. 물론 범행을 인정하지 않은 것도 맞는데 형사가 압박하는 입장에서는 반박하지 않았다는 것이 더 맞다.

“Wiseguy” 는 사실 마피아에 소속된 공식 단원이라는 뜻이다. 똑똑한 사람이 아니고… 이 단어를 모른다고 해도 유추해볼 수 있는 이유가 몇 개 있다. 마커스 형사가 마피아와 마가렉이 손 잡은 사건을 대면서 추궁하는 장면이 있고 (위) 원래 전통적으로 공사장 인부나 항구 일꾼들 노조는 마피아가 꽉 잡고 있는 사업들이기 때문이다. 특히나 영어 캡션에 wiseguy 로 붙여 썼는데 문법 파괴자가 아닌 이상 이상하게 생각해서 검색 돌려볼만 하지 않나.

호텔에 이름을 안 주는 것과 호텔이 이름을 갖고 있는데 안 주는 것은 다른 내용이지 않나. 여자가 호텔에 이름을 안 주는 건 자기가 비밀 외교 작전을 수행하고 있어서 그런 거고, 호텔이 이름을 안 준다면 그건 고객 정보를 보호하는 건데.

This bothers me so much. The whole point of a consulting detective is that he is not part of the police force and is only consulted. But the word used here denotes a title, rank in the official police hierarchy. This mistake is consistent throughout season 4, which leads me to believe it was a project-wide decision.

형사를 표준국어대사전에 검색 해 보면:

경찰관을 가르키는 용어라고 풀이한다. 특히나 한국어에서 형사라고 쓰면 경찰 조직의 한 계급을 가르키는 단어인데, 그걸 경찰 외부에서 일하는 사립 탐정에게 쓰면 되냐고요. 탐정이라는 단어가 시즌 1, 2, 3에서 계속 쓰였는데도.

원래 죽은 걸로 알려진 아들의 생사에 대해서 이야기할때, 그 부모가 자기 아들이 살아있다고 확신한다고 하면 (죽었을거라고 생각하지만 아직은) 살아있다고 확신한다는 뜻이다. 그런데 사실 몰랜드는 자신의 정보력을 이용해서 마이크로프트가 죽은 척을 했을 뿐이고 증인 보호 프로그램에 들어가 있는 걸 알고 있기 때문에 다르게 표현하는게 맞다.
